Hockey puck mount. Good and bad.

Post by rmorton »

Replaced the busted mushroom with the hockey pucks yesterday. Shifts much smoother. Especially from park to drive. Feels more responsive. I love it!

However, from about 1200 - 1800 rpm I'm getting engine vibration inside the cab pretty bad. Enough that it is audible and stuff in the cup holder rattles. Is it possible that I tightened the bolt down too much? I'm thinking about loosing it up some.

From bottom up I used: grade 5 bolt head, washer, stabilizer link bushing, washer, subframe, 3 pucks, stack of washers, mount, nylon nut.

Any thoughts?

Everyone gets the vibration that does this. Mine smooths out nicely at freeway cruising speeds of 65mph or more though. I don't know that loosening the nut would be the greatest idea, there's alot of torque and stress on there so it should be tight. In my opinion the pros outweigh the cons and I've learned to live with it, mine actually sounds like an exhaust rumble inside ;)

Yeah, I believe everyone that does this gets a slight vibration. Mine has it, but after almost a year, I don't even notice it anymore. I still plan to add another bushing and a few more washers on it this summer, just to level it up a bit more. But, give it some time, eventually you'll get completely used to it, especially now that you can put more power to the wheels!

There is no bad. Vibration = feeling of power.

There is no question it drives better. Stock mount = grandpa car.

You could try putting another stabalizer bushing between the mount and top nut, that should help some as well.

Agreed. Add another bushing on top. Mines pretty gruff but I have a very stupid engine.

I see. Well, I can probably live with it like most of you have. I love everything about it except that vibe. Might add another bushing under the bolt head and see what happens when I get time.

Tanks for da feedback.

I'm torn.

I had the hockey puck mount on the 01 with some bushings but still had some significant vibration.

On my current SSEi, I have gone through 2 mounts so far in the last couple years over 20,000 miles or so. The Anchor mounts seem to last 8000-12000 miles in my experience. Thankfully they have lifetime warranty but it is a pain to swap out every 3-6 months.

I may have worn mounts which are making them fail faster, not sure.

Its your call, no real "good" option IMO.

EDIT: I should also add, yes, if you do a hockey puck it will last forever. You need rubber bushings on both sides of the top of the bolt. This helps a little but you get some rattles at certain RPMs in the cabin.

I had a hockey puck mount I removed it, didn't like the vibration at all with my driving speeds. I put in an anchor mount. About 15k miles and still good but I bought local so when it fails I'll get another at no charge.

I hated the vibration that I got from the solid mount, and tried various things to subdue it. What finally worked was using some rubber grommets that I had laying around. It can barely be felt now.

I have an old endlink bushing under mine and I don't even notice it anymore, but we just did one on my buddy's 05 SLE yesterday and he's not a huge fan. Might throw another endlink bushing on top if he doesn't get used to it, and see if that mellows it out.

I tried about 4 variations of bushings and rubber pieces and some where better then others without a doubt. I think I still have most of the parts around if anyone wants it. Cover shipping and its yours.

I think I got used to it more because I got used to the nasty vibration my LeSabre would develop at higher speeds (50mph+). I had that looked into several times, and no one could find the problem, so I just learned to ignore it. Because of that, the vibrations I get from the hockey pucks are nothing.

Of course, everyone is different. I just didn't want to keep replacing the factory mount every 3,000 miles.

I have Bolt/washer/subframe/3 pucks/couple washers/mount/rubber end link bushing/washer/lock nut.

i added the end link bushing in mine and it took almost any vibration away..before i put it in the vibs were pretty strong in the car to the point i didnt like it, and i will sacrifice quite a bit for performance but it was too much. still there a tiny bit but not enought to be any concern to me (very small ammount) which is to be expected with basically a solid mount.
