Strange Noise When Turning Left
Hello everyone, I am very frusturated and cannot figure out what this noise is when I only turn left. It sounds exactly like "sphf sphf sphf sphf sphf sphf sphf sphf" and it becomes louder and more pronounced when I am going faster (30mph) in a slight left turn. There is NO noise when going straight, turning right, or even turning left at low speeds. Could this be a worn out wheel bearing? I have also noticed that my left outer tie-rod appears to have turned "inside out" because it is covered in a thick black tar/goo (the right outer tie-rod looks normal).... Please help! I don't know what to do, or if this is even a serious issue

Could it be that I just have to grease the wheel bearings?

Bearings tend to have a whirring noise like an airplane.

Re: Strange Noise When Turning Left
Is there something grinding/rubbing??? Perhaps the plastic wheel well liner.

Re: Strange Noise When Turning Left
could it be your cv joint? Jack up the car and see if you have play in the axle.

If here's grease everywhere, definitely inspect the CV boot/joint.

If you can't find anything else, check the little tabs on the bottom of the metal shield that is close to the rotor. Bend it back, and see if the noise goes away.

Re: Strange Noise When Turning Left
Totally sounds like a wheel hub bearing to me. You can't grease the hub bearing, it's sealed. Replacing wheel hub is the fix for that. We have a how-to in Techinfo.
While doing that, I'd replace the effed-up outer tie rod end, too.
But seriously. Wheel hub. Happens all the time. Very common.

Yeah I was thinking it is the wheel bearing as well. I'm pretty sure they are original... year 2000. How long do they typically last?

Re: Strange Noise When Turning Left
They vary. I've seen them last as few as four years and as long as nine years. Look for good quality replacement hubs. TRW and National have good reputations.BonnevilleSE2000 wrote:Yeah I was thinking it is the wheel bearing as well. I'm pretty sure they are original... year 2000. How long do they typically last?

Re: Strange Noise When Turning Left
Alright thanks. Actually I believe the noise to be coming from a bad CV Axel. Reason being is that there is a lot of CV Axel grease flung all over on the left side.... But the noise only occurs when I turn left (which would be the right CV Axel?) I'm still not positive but it's an educated guess.

Could be either one, or both. A good inspection should answer that.BonnevilleSE2000 wrote:Alright thanks. Actually I believe the noise to be coming from a bad CV Axle.
