Crickets under the hood
You know how they say you can tell the temp outside by the number of chirps a cricket makes? Well if thats true it must be a billion degrees under my hood cause somethings seriously chirpin. Ive narrowed it down to the belt running SC and WP no AC I have a delete pulley. no chirping with belt off... belt on chirping. car in motion chirping at stop light it quiets down and sometimes goes away. Can the amount of tension on the belt lead to this chirping? Or maybe the water pump? How should I go about diagnosing where this is coming from? I have replaced the tensioner pulley no change, didn't want to spring for the tensioner it's self if I didnt have to. If I do need one is it ok to get one from a wrecker or buy new? As always all help is appreciated.

Re: Crickets under the hood
How does the belt look? Any cracking etc? A worn belt will definitely chirp and squeal.
Take the belt off and check all of the pulleys for any play, spin them by hand and see if any bearing noise is evident. Replace any bad pullies and try again. Also, check the tensioner, make sure it has good spring to it and isn't seized up. If all looks good it is likely time for a new belt.

Re: Crickets under the hood
Here a vid of the sound. This is right after startup at idle. http://s81.beta.photobucket.com/user/sa ... 2.mp4.html
The chirping increases when the car is in gear and Im driving. The belt looks fine, no cracks at all. There is a little wear on the edges but nothing major from what I can tell. all pulleys move freely with no play/ noise. ???

Re: Crickets under the hood
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was the idler pulley. I had to put one on my '95 Bonneville a couple of summers ago. Cost me about $85, including labor. The one on my LSS is raising hell right now. I can temporarily hush it up with a shot of silicone spray, but that fix only lasts a few days, less if the weather is damp. They can often chirp for a long time before they go out completely. It just becomes a game of attrition with your nerves.

Re: Crickets under the hood
I have the same sound from my 95 when I start it on a cold morning.
It lasts about 5 minutes or until warmup.
In my case it is the waterpump.
I took an auto stethoscope and listened to each spinning device.
The stethoscopes aren't expensive, but you have to be careful
when using them. A chirp like that will come through loud and clear, I'm sure.
It could be any one of the spinning bearings on the engine front, waterpump,
alternator, idler pulley or supercharger.

Link still won't work for me. I can get into your account but not see the video. It might be because I'm on my phone and don't use a home computer. I hope the other's suggestion will help you!

Lots of confirmed sources for this annoyance. Mine was the alternator bearings, rebuilt.

Re: Crickets under the hood
On our '93, the hoses for the heater core were dripping on the belt after the motor was shut off. It would squeak like that at first. It's progressed to the point where it doesn't go away.. Just something else to check for.

Re: Crickets under the hood
My 98 SSEI is doing this two. I took it to Sun tire and we have made assumptions to either the bearings in the supercharger or the pulley. I havent quite gotten around to swapping the pulley its 75 bucks with my corporate discount at my local auto store and then 2 hours labor for sun tire. So if I do that I will let you know if that helped or not.

Re: Crickets under the hood
Eh ... I had a sound like that on my 94, and in my case it was ... geeeeeeeee ... I only know the name in Finnish, but it has to do with the AC, it's a bearing and from Finnish translated "AC free clutch bearing". I found a word "A/C Idler Pulley Bearing", but very unsure if that's it.
