97 SE EGR Question

Post by phils97bonn »

97 SE

This vehicle has the Linear EGR valve on her controlled by the PCM.

Is there any way to check this thing without special test equipment?

I took it off, plugged up the holes in the EGR mounting flange, got her warmed up,
revv'ed her up, but the pintle, she no move. Stays closed. I wonder if the PCM
tells it to stay closed when the car is in Park? It looks like the tube from the EGR mounting
flange going to the intake manifold has been passing gas, (exhaust, he he) but I'm not
sure it is working now. I will assume its working - no noticeable pinging when I stomp on
the pedal - not that I would ever do that.

Also: I guess the PCM would detect if the EGR valve is not opening to commanded position and
generating a fault code? (just gessin' here)

Any ideas on checking this thing?

I know that the older ECM's would not command EGR in park. Not sure about an OBD-2.

Without special equipment, do what you already did, make a wire extension so you can hold the valve inside the car while driving?

Yeah if I remember right OB2 is the same, you have to be in gear and at a certain % load for the PCM to open the EGR.. The EGR will do a Purge Flow test when certain conditions are met, The PCM also monitors the Pintle Position, Generally if anything is out of range or malfunctioning the PCM will set a code... any codes?
