Tinting interior bulbs red

Post by JoeK »

I wanted to replace the interior bulbs of my 03 bonneville SE but when i took them out these are the literal weirdest bulbs i have ever seen. They look like fuses... Any ideas on how i can tint them red? Going for an all red interior ;)

replace them with red bulbs, i did that with most interior lights. Keep in mind that with red bulbs it is a lot harder to see, even with led

You could try finding some Red Plasti-Dip and spray the lights with that. Plus side is, I'm almost positive it is heat resistant and if you mess up, just peel it off.

LOL. Plastidip is opaque. And as the bulb gets hot, it's gonna start a fire or something.

They make VHT Nightshades in Red. If you really don't want to spend the money on the red bulbs, that would work...

Why is that funny I said Plasti-Dip? Every where I've checked said it would be fine on lights. http://www.plastidip.com/oem.php It forms a protective coating and is heat resistant. Though I don't really recommend painting any light, it's a cheap alternative to buying all the lights pre-tinted.

The lights might glow red, but they will barely put out any light...

I have bought red lights and I've also bought these little red "sleeves" that you slide over the light. They are a rubbery plastic that will melt a little and bond to the light. The sleeves seemed to not last as long as the red lights but the were less than $2 for a 2 pack at Autozone

If you put any colored light in a vehicle or even a house, they barely put out light. I think he just wants the red light for an accent light, or something like that. Not to shine up the whole car.

I think plasti dip is too thick/opaque(i.e. wont let light out). I would have to see one dipped and installed. I dont think its the best way.

Nah, I don't mean dip it. I meant get the spray on stuff that you can control the coats/layers on it.

I know what you mean, but i still think it will hinder the lights/not look good as bulbs or VHT.

It's just too thick of a coating to work right. It's not designed for light to come through it. Period.

I think I'd rather keep my stock bulbs and then just add some red led's somewhere else in the car. I want to see around in my car when I turn the lights on.

You could also devise a way to use a red clear plastic as a "cover". Double sided tape or something maybe.

go to advance or any other autpart store & get the red tape they sale to fix borken tail-lights. Dont tap it to the bulb. tape it over the hole directly to the dash, I had to use two strips over each hole to completly cover the area. for the lights on the roof, remove the transparent covers and tape the inerior and trim with a razor blade. install them back and enjoy your red lights. I did this about 5 years ago and still holding perfectly.

I did this on my 1993. Some time ago, so did Jim W. We both used red window tint in bulb housings, I still have a bit of the roll left, and have considered doing my BMW red too....

For a whole car it was the cheapest, and gives good light output vs gels, caps, etc.

I did this on my SSEi. I tried the sleeves found at Advance/Autozone but those greatly dimmed the lights and looked more pink than red. I wrapped some brake light lens repair tape around them once too...that melted, believe it or not. I found red bulbs somewhere (I forget where exactly) and they were better but still somewhat dim. But I ended up finding LED replacements online at v-LED. Works perfect and puts out a lot of light. Also just to note, I had two LED's were bad when I received them, I contacted v-LED about it and they immediately shipped out replacements!
