Interior hood release---broken

My hod release inside my 2000 ssei broke the other day. So I went to remove it thinking it would be an easy fix
1. remove 2 screws
2. squeeze the 2 plastic tabs to get the mechanism to release from the steel body
3. then I unhooked the end of the cable from the lever.

So when I go to pull the mechanism out it will not come out. The cable is still attached to the bracket and I can not get to it because the part where the cable is attached to the mechanism still extends into the steel (body) of the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The entire cable needs to pull through the body. You'll need to remove the wheel well plastic to release the grommet.
