Non 'charged 02 Bonnie - Stall

Post by cprince »

Scared the goop out of me!

I drive 40 miles to work, and about halfway through the drive after coming off a highway cutting through the city my car stalled at an on ramp to a parkway. Stinking thing never stalled, coughed or choked before. I got this car in September... it has about 100 000 miles on it.

Just died. I was able to start it immediately, but when I put it into drive, it would die again without moving. I did this about 10 times... before it dawned on me that because it started fine, I would just rev the engine and slap it into gear with the revs at about 2k.... worked.

Able to drive the rest of the way to work... but here I sit a little put off and wondering what the heck the problem might be.

My first thoughts are of the wires, coils and spark plug area.

We are into about the 5th day of bellow freezing temps at about 10F... the car starts perfectly every time...

Any other thoughts?

I'm guessing MAF sensor either dirty or bad.

I hope that it is that easy!!

lol.... I am so used to the hard way...

Thanks for the input. I think that it is a logical assumption. I have yet to crack open the air filter... :banghead: and if it is as dirty as the inside of the car when I bought it, chances are the MAF looks like something you would pull out of you shower drain when you have a house full of long haired girls!!!

I've seen a bad Crank Sensor and/or Ignition Control Module (What the coil packs sit on) cause this. If the aforementioned fails, don't forget about those two things, they don't always show a code or a light....

Pulled the codes and found that the EGR is throwing codes (1404 was one of them...)

That would explain the stall I suppose... but from what I am reading, it seems to get more blame for a hard HOT start than a stall... but... whatever...!

Was told that I can pull one off of any car with a 3.8 naturally aspirated of a similar year and that it should be good to go.

Sound right to you all..?

Check your EGR pipe for cracks. You can also clean the pintle and see if that helps.
