gxp sways

Post by Speedin Demon77 »

Ive been wasting the past 2 hours seaching posts. Not much help. Ive got gxp sways for my ssei. Ive got the moog heavy duty endlinks. Are the energy suspension that much better? Do the moogs need to be shortened? Whats the best length for the links? And Ive seen gxp replacement shocks available at the parts stores. Do these bolt up to the ssei or are mods needed? ...rear shocks are gone so i figured upgrade time ;) Thanks

The GXP listed replacement shocks at any parts store are the Monroe MA822's, exact same shock for an SSEi, SLE or SE. You'd have to get the shocks new from GM to have anything different.

The energy links and mount busjinhs are wekk worth it in my opinion. tje rear will require custim fabrication on noth parts nut nothing difficult.

Ed is exactly right about the struts. The best ive found is the delci gxp repkacements. No part number off jand aand internetting in this phine hets worse by the minute.

GXP struts are FE5-specific. You may run into underdamping issues if you put in any aftermarket solution.

I just put in a new Delco set myself. I got my handling back :)

I've seen a lot of guys using the monroes. Some use delcos. Is the performance equal? Does it come down to cost?

While not necessarily stiffer (haven't had much seat time in 2000+ non-GXP cars), the Delco FE5 strut is rated to be "heavy duty". This is in order to keep up with the demands of a stiffer spring. I wouldn't expect the Monroe (or any other aftermarket solution including KYB or Sachs) to last as long.

Considering that on RockAuto, a set of Delco FE5 struts costs about the same as Delco FE2 (SSEi) struts, I'd say its worth it.

Wait, are we talking front struts or rear shocks? There's a big difference.

Hm yes, looks like we're actually talking about the rear. In FE5 trim, Delco rear shocks are much more - $200 a corner on RockAuto.

You should probably be doing all four if you elect to run FE5 suspension. If you retain your FE2 springs but bolt on a GXP sway, you should be able to get away with a regular aftermarket option unless you're cool with the extra cost. Them FE5 rear shocks are fat mofos

No time to keep searching so I got the Monroes. Very nice. And they were black, not white like in the pic. The air lines were a pita. One broke. Ended up cutting the ends. Then salvaging the o rings and installing them like that. Held in great. GXP sways are sweeeet! Need to sell my fe2 sways now lol. Btw Those won't fit on older gen bonnevilles rite? My girl has a 92 se I need to tweak lol. Checking my alignment next and I think I need some lowering springs, at least for the front ;)

For the front, I plan to cut my fe2 coils a little and use fe5 struts. In back, lowering is more complicated...

Nope, sways won't fit the 92.

They're all black. Not sure why the picture shows white ones.
