Plastidipp -the solution to Lebra's?

Post by olblueeyesbonne »

Anyone think of/try this yet?
I'd be curious as to how it'd hold up to road rash on my newly repainted bumpers.

I think it would look like you put rock guard all over the front of your car. It would look bad, IMO. I'd rather spend the extra money and put that 3M film on your car. I personally prefer the clean look of nothing on the front of my car, so I just have to be careful and cross my fingers that nothing happens to my bumper lol

Lets try it on my 02 SLE. The hood and front bumper look like hell from all the rocks hitting it at highway speeds. If it looks crappy then we tear it off.

I wouldn't do it on fresh paint because A: It's gonna f**k with the chemical process in fresh paint and B: Rocks will chip right through it, and C: What's the point of semi-permanently covering up fresh paint with an opaque coating? Get the 3M Film after the paint has had a month to de-gas.

Joe's car sounds like a better candidate, as the paint is already FUBAR, so you're not gonna hurt anything.

Well, the paint it 6+ months fresh -just haven't put the bumpers on either of the 99 SSEi's, 01 SLE, or the GTP.

I was thinking more along the lines of doing it in early November and taking it off in the spring. Possibly do the rocker panels as well, but I suspect ice build up on the rockers would tear/peel the coating.

Joe, I'd be game to try it on your car. Shoot me a call sometime and we can schedule a day to do it. Might make for a nice central MN mini-meet for the 3800 crowd now that there are several MNClubGP and Pontiac Bonneville Club youngsters in town for school.

I had one put on the wife's '09 CTS and will have it done to her '11 CTS. I love the way they look without having to have the big bulky bra to cover the car's lines. - BC

I could see doing it for a very lengthy road trip. Likely better than nothing, and would make getting the bugs off a lot easier.

It'll probably get chewed up some.

Permanently, you'll get some lines of different fading.

Is Plasti dip pretty much just a thin film of rubberized coating?

its been done plenty before. dipyourcar.com has paint kits and YouTube videos up of just about everything. even a guy who has done his personal Audi multiple times in different colors. there are always recommended links of people putting temporary bras on vehicles for cheap with PlastiDip. its actually something I am considering for my next drive, along with the under door plastic that constantly gets roadrash.
