Awful noise when turning.

Awful noise when turning.
I doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it makes my cringe a bit. I have no trouble at all steering or turning for that matter, It just sounds horrible. Ive repeatedly checked the power steering fluid levels and the are fine a bit high even. When I had my car in the shop a few months back the mechanic showed me a line near the front passenger wheel he said looked a bit leaky, could this be causing the problem?

Its sort of a moaning/whining noise. It almost sounds like my car is straining to turn.

Do you mean the steering pump is just going dead? Because I have no performance issues or leaks otherwise. What is the average cost of replacing that?mdrew wrote:sounds like the power steering pump

If it was going dead wouldn't it be making it hard to turn?

Sounds like the pump is cavitating, probably going to die. Could be debris blocking off the entry to the pump inside the reservoir causing the cavatation. Running it like that will eventually kill it even if the pump itself is good and still getting enough fluid through to make it easy to turn. My bet is that the pump is already basically shot and needs replaced.

Just went through something similar myself. It is the pump, it is on its last limbs. I at first had a whine on turns, even though the turning was smooth. What happened to me is that eventually it just started leaking from the pump itself. This didn't take long from the moment the whine started, maybe a month or so. Replace the pump. Easily done in the drive way. If i recall correctly. The high pressure line is a 16mm. you will need a pulley puller in most cases(rent at an autozone or pepboys) unless you buy a pump with the pulley on it already. It will be tight working quarters, but with patience and a little wit it is easily doable.

Just some price perspective. I paid 90 bucks for a pump and a high pressure line. the mechanic was asking for almost 200 bucks in parts alone and then another 200 for pump replacement. 400 bucks for two hours work? i don't think so!
