Fuel gauge/tank issue

Post by aeromonte »

My 2003 SSEi's fuel gauge seems to read full for a while (after the tank is filled) and then when it starts to go down, it goes down a lot faster than it should. Any ideas? Does this sound like the "fuel sensor finger issue" I have read about on this forum (where you can buy a Tahoo sensor part and fix for a lot cheaper than buying the whole new GM part)???

Also, not sure if it was a just a coincidence, but I don't usually fill my tank until the pump "clicks" off (because it's too expensive  ), but I did the other day and the pump never "clicked" off automatically when the tank was full. Gas just ran out like crazy until I manually stopped it. I'm not sure if it was a bad pump - or something in the tank related to my gauge issue..

Any thoughts would be appreciated - Thanks!!!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention - information center just started saying "check gas/fuel cap"
The fuel gauge has not been working some time before this though..

Most likely its a bad gas pump.. However the check the gas cap is usually the rubber ring not sealing check where it mates with the gas tank check it for rust if so clean it up. replace the gas cap.. Mine used to do that fixed it with what i have suggested. As far as the fuel gage not working its probably the fuel level sender on the float. Which i have also done with instruction from this site.. Basically when it comes to Bonnies this site is the best.

Watch the video its very detailed

Most likely your fuel sender is on the way out. I would venture to say that this is your problem.

I agree that the fuel sender is the likely problem for your gauge. This is a link that contains all 3 of the videos that Hans did for the replacement.http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... f=9&t=3463

If you prefer pictures over a video, then go here.

As stated, start by check for rust around the filler tube. Put a rag in the tube opening, and sand off whatever you can, lube the sealing surface with some dielectric grease. If that doesn't help, you can try replacing the gas cap. If it's not the rust, the cap is not the usual first suspect. In order of reported problems, the first is the vent valve, located under the car near the rear wheels. The second the solenoid, on the engine, then the gas cap, followed by leaks in the tubing. It can be a fun problem to track down.

Awesome! Thanks everyone! Really good info!!

Looks like I'm going to buy the Tahoo fuel sender part and try to fix it myself.

As far as the gas cap warning light: There is no rust on the filler tube, but the o-ring in the fuel cap is cracked in a few places (looks like it just got old and dry-rotted a bit). I'll replace that first and see if the warning light goes out.

Thanks again!
