1992 ssei stalls when hot

Post by dustfilter »

Hey guys
I am at my wits end. I have a 1992 bonneville ssei. It has a less than smooth Idle and a check engine light on but I cannot get a diagnostic tool to read the codes. There seems to be no power to the port and haven't been able to figure that out yet. Also and more urgently when the car gets up to a regular "hot" temp it will stall and not start until allowed to sit a cool for 15 minutes or so. Then it will start right up and run good, until it heats up again. I have tested the ignition control module, good. Replaced the engine coolant temp sending unit. Tested the fans, good.

I've checked grounds and replaced plugss and wires, nest will be clean/replace maf sensor.

I am trying to get this car more road worthy as it drives great and is pretty nice for its age. I think the guy I got it from just ran out of "try" and I got a deal on it.

I have searched and read up here on the forum extensively but haven't figured it out yet. What next?

Thanks for your help guys.

Sounds like a crank sensor issue.

That is the next one I have been looking at. Looks like a bugger to get to for such a little part. I"ll start psyching myself up for that one.

Thankfully I have some good mechanics to chew there ear off if I get confused and I can borrow a big impact.

Thank you.

Make sure you get an acdelco brand crank sensor. All the other brands I have used and I had to do the repair again about 2-3 months later.

I agree it sounds a lot like a crank sensor. Make sure to very accurately gage the distance from the crank to the halls in the sensor. If you install the new sensor mis-aligned, the rings on the crank pulley will destroy the new sensor right away.

Here's how you can pull codes yourself with nothing more than a paper clip.

Well finally got some time to work on the car. Changed the crank position sensor and think someone has done it before because the debris cover is missing and the harmonic balancer doesn't look original. :dontknow:

Paper clipped my codes and came up with 17- spark reference circuit. Replaced the cps to correct this
21 - Throttle position sensor (voltage high).
41 - cam sensor circuit. Gonna get to that #-o
43 - electric spark control.
56 - quad driver "b" fault. What is this?
and the infamous 58 - personal automotive fuel enable circuit.

Oh and the new cps fixed the car stalling. =D>

After resetting the codes, the only ones to come back were; 41,43, and 56.

What do you guys think about the remaining codes? Am I on the right track?

41/43 tend to be a bad cam sensor (easy to replace), missing cam magnet (a bugger to replace, and unfortunately more likely), or cam harness bad wiring. 56 tends to be one of those things that few people know... If I had a free hour, I'd go through my service manual and walk you through that one. It tends to be nothing that matters, or simply that you had your foot on the brake.

+1 on cam sensor/interupt/wiring

Quad driver faults mean that the item controlled on that circuit is not connected or is shorted out, these quad drivers control the relays and solenoids (EGR, IAC, etc...). If left broken for too long it can cause the quad driver to fail, meaning replacing the computer to fix. I don't know what is on that particualr circuit, I don't have my CSM handy either.

Thanks guys, you have given me more information than I have been able to find searching here.

I was guessing the cam sensor could also affect the spark control. I am replacing the sensor this weekend and know that I need to look for the magnet. Hopefully it's there.

I have found much conflicting stuff on that 56 code.

I really appreciate the help guys. Having only a chilton to use, this forum makes that book seem like a saturday comics page.
