4t60E rebuild kits suggestions

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

4t60E rebuild kits suggestions

Post by eazhar »

The engine is complete! So EchoSSEI convinced me that before I drop it in, I might as well rebuild the transmission since it has more than 200k miles on it and since I am 7 bolts and 2 drive shafts away from pulling it out. Plus I don't know how all the performance parts on the motor will affect the tranny lifespan in the next few months. I've been doing some really cursory research on how to tackle it and could use some feedback.

I went ahead and purchased that DVD of the 4t65E performance rebuild floating around on eBay and it claims, in addition to a general overhaul:
*Install process of a valve body shift kit
*different chain options
*how-to modify the hydraulic apply circuits
*different horsepower ratings for different clutch packs
*supply more oil to the support bushings
*proper clutch pack preparation
*how-to modify the drum apply area for a better grip
*tips and tricks in order to run cooler, shift faster/harder/firmer, reduce shift overlap, increase line pressure rise
First question: How much of this does not apply to the 4t60E?

Secondly, I want to purchase a rebuild kit (as my title suggests). I found a few on eBay. Assuming a fairly tight budget, should I get one with pistons ($275) or without pistons ($136)? It seems like both kits contain borg-warner frictions and steels. However, these kits won't help me out very much on the above stuff I have quoted from the performance rebuild DVD.. Am I right about that? (Don't know much about transmissions or parts vocabulary but I'll definitely be learning from this project). Is there a better kit out there I should get? Should I be looking at 65E kits too and piecemealing parts from two kits?

Third, If I decide to swap it out for a 4t65E, what would I have to replace aside from the PCM and the wiring harness?

Thanks for the input everybody

this might help, its from my 4T60-E buildup. My turbo Z34 dynoed 331hp 355TQ. stock trans lasted well into the 130-140K miles, i expect the upgraded one to last atleast as long.

Yours being a 1996 should have the updated Sprags.. I did (upon advice from "3100-Modified" on 60degreev6.com)
* Rabestos Upgraded Clutches
* Hardend Reaction Shell
* New Chain (the 4T60-E should alrady have a 7/8" Chain)
* Transgo Shift Kit improver
* Custom 3000 rpm stall TQ converter (local tq converter shop did mine)
* New OEM vac Modualtor (had problems with the Red top ones that are adjustable, due to turbo setup)
* 4th Hub
* Standard rebuild repacement items

Most of my parts came from:

I should mention, here is what I have done with my L67 so far:
*Block with cylinder bored 20/1000 over
*Diamond Pistons
*Intense Stage 1x Cam
*Yella Terra Roller Rocker Arms (1.8 ratio)
*LS1 Pushrods
*Comp Cams 105
*3.2'' Supercharger pulley
*SLP Headers
Here is a list of what I think I will be getting with a few questions..
-Master overhaul kit:
Borg Warner complete high energy friction set
filter
vacuum modulator
low band, reverse band
bushing set
front seal and axle seals
-HARDENED REVERSE REACTION SHELL
-TRANSGO ShiftKit
-New Chain (.875" 7/8" WIDTH WITH ROUND TYPE PINS)
-New OEM Solenoid Kit (2 shift solenoids, TCC Solenoid, EPC PWM Solenoid) -- How important are these? Do I need all 4 or are some of them the same?
-New OEM 4th Hub clutch (How important is this?)

Anything egregious I'm missing?

My 4th hub was damaged so i had to replace mine. I would contact the guy on the 60*v6 board "3100-Modified" is his user name, he knows quite a bit about the 60's. May also want to contact jeff at EP (engineered Performance) and get his input on it. I have a good mechanic that did my work for me, trans rebuild is beyond my abilities.

the dvd on how to rebuild your tranny, is very good! if follow, anybody can do it. if you can try to go with the super rebuild kit. or try to upgrade your clutches and steel to blue plate. And yes!! get the one with the pistons.
