Knock
So I know knock has been beaten to death on this forum for you L67 guys, but I'm running an L36. What are acceptable levels of knock to see on a L36?
FWIW, I've got a ported lower intake manifold, FWI, one step colder plugs, and a very mildly ported front exhaust manifold.
Thanks.

short answer: 0
A few degrees on really hot days or hard beatings can be expected but ideally zero. Sometimes you'll catch some shifting gears while going WOT. I'm tuned at 18* timing. I think I have my aeroforce set to light up at 3 degrees and I've never seen it light up. I've seen some blips here and there on scans though (fractions of a degree) that are usually from high load situations. I topswapped and still have the L36 bottom end so I think I'm a bit more prone to knock than typical.

I haven't bothered to insulate from false knock but I haven't had issues with it so I haven't bothered.

Re: Knock
I read a article stating that the knock sensor should be covered. The sensor should be picking up signal/noise internally not external or not from the valve train.

Re: Knock
Yes, you should insulate the transmission casing and both knock sensors. This helps eliminate false knock from exerior noises. You want the sensor to pick up knock from pre detonation inside the motor.

Re: Knock
Is it possible to place the dynamat on the trans without removing it from the car by chance?

Re: Knock
First off, Carl, knock isn't AS big of an issue for you, as you're N/A. In a forced induction motor, knock basically turns boost into a cutting torch to kill the piston. In an N/A motor, it's just an annoyance...

Re: Knock
Ah okay. Good to know. It's just since I'm planning on a top swap this summer, I'm a little scared that it already has knock creeping up on it. Granted, it's usually with 87 in it. Since I rarely run premium. But it's almost all gone with premium and a cool night. Running 87 and with it being 85 degrees outside I saw upwards of 7 degrees of knock at WOT. And it would also appear every once in a while while pulling in second, not WOT, but just like accelerating up to speed, and with the TC locked up.00Beast wrote:First off, Carl, knock isn't AS big of an issue for you, as you're N/A. Re: Knock
Accelerating with the TC locked up will cause "knock" no matter what, so don't worry about that.
When you guys get the HPT, look at it with that. Should give you a better idea of what's causing it, and when and where it's happening.

A cooler is a good idea anyway for anyone modding. More hp = more heatdeano55 wrote:You are not covering enough of the transmission to warrant a transcooler, its just at the top of differential but a cooler could be a good idea.

Re: Knock
Cooler and a shift kit are a good upgrade for any 4T65 transmission. Coolers are good for any trans, especially if they are known to have heat related failures. (GM)

That's my next mod. Especially since after driving around for more than half hour, my trans temps are "chillin" at 210 degrees.

Re: Knock
If only you could turn the fans on with the AF, that would keep the temps somewhat lower than that....

Re: Knock
Personally I would never bother with a trans cooler unless you plan on towing or see trans temps excessively high. I don't think heat is an issue with our transmissions. It's hard pieces and sensors breaking and typical wear'n'tear.
