new kenwood Subs

quick ? i bought a 10in kenwood sub 1000watts max 300 Rms i also bought a Alpine Amp 500 watts class d 300 watts Rms. According to specs i should be able to run the amp full powered to the sub correct? Well i put it all in yesterday and i was getting a weird smell!! I was curious is this common with new subs are they just breaking in or what. At the moment i turned the amp down under half way im scared to turn it up cuz i dont wanna blow the sub

Pretty common with any new equipment. They come shipped with an oil on them to keep them from corroding when just sitting on shelves. As they get hot when you use them, it'll burn the oil off. Even my amp did it when it was new. My amp also ran really hot before it burned the oil off, but once I beat on it for a while it started to run cooler, just FYI.

You will NOT be able to run that amp turned all the way up with that sub, or any sub for that matter. Usually about 1/2 to 3/4 on the gain is all you can safely run on any amp with any sub. Any higher then that and when you crank the volume you will get clipping from the amp not having enough power to push that hard. Clipping overheats the voice coil and will burn up a sub faster then overpowering it.

Best bet is to get an amp that is capable of more power RMS then the sub can handle RMS and turn the amp down to a safe level for the sub. If you have a lower power amp then the sub can handle, turn the amp up until it is loud enough like you want but doesn't get any clipping even when cranked up. You will know clipping when you hear it, it will sound like the speaker is muffled and you won't get the full sound from the sub. If you hear that you are in the danger zone for your voice coil and should turn down the amp right away to avoid blowing the sub.

A hot smell is sort of normal, but burning is bad!

ok so my gain 1/2 to 3/4 What about the other to adjustments sorry im kinda stereo stupid i nknow one of them says LPF taking that is the Filter they talk about

That's your Low Pass Filter. I think that's kinda personal preference as to how you want your sound, how low you want your bass.

get a O-scope, see where head unit starts to clip, set gains on amp accordingly.

and the smell you are getting is from clipping.

dirty power.

you can get close to setting an amps gain properly with a DMM.
