96 Silverado hazard lights don't work

Post by harofreak00 »

I just had to replace the ignition switch on my truck because it was causing transmission issues. While I was in the column, I figured I would try to see why my hazard lights don't work. They haven't worked since I bought the truck.

When the hazard switch is in the normal "off" position, the turn siginals work fine.
When the hazard switch is in the "on" position, the turn signals do not work at all.

I did some reading on another forum, and read something about their being seperate flashers for the turn signals and the hazard lights. It said that it would be just dangling under the dash by the drivers feet. I found this, but its only the door lock relay:

I dug around under the dash, and only found one "combination flasher".

I replaced this with a junk yard unit and it didn't do anything.

Anyone know where I might find the hazard flasher, or what could be wrong?

here are some more pics

I have to poke around the Tahoe tonight. I lost my cluster lights this morning and I just have to see my gauges. I'll turn my hazards on and see where the blinker is.

Hmmm....maybe you're actually missing the blinker(?)

I just checked mine, also a 96 Silverado, and that combination flasher is the flasher for the hazards. When the hazards are on in mine it clicks and I can both feel and hear it, if I remove it the hazards stop.

My '99 Tahoe does the same thing. Maybe you just got a bad module from the yard?

Or the button that actuates his flashers is bad?

Ok, not to be "stupid" but isn't 96 still a year where if the bulb is bad it won't work. Or if the bulb is wrong or half the element is bad ? I know on my old 92 ciera when the bulb went out the turn signal would just light the indicator on the dash but not actually flash the lights.
I've been to jail in 12 different states ! ;)

For Sale at this time.

Even if the bulb is bad, the blinker module will still click. Think of them as a relay.

Andrew, did you happen to check for continuity when the switch is closed?

Ya I'll have to test the switch. That's about the only thing left it could be.
