S/C coupler replacment

Post by Dustin »

How long should this take to replace?
What would be an average/fair price to pay?
Any recommendations in the Portland/Vancouver area?

Thanks

1992-1995 Series 1 is a bit more labour intensive, as the entire supercharger needs to be removed. You will also need a new SC gasket.

I remembered that shortly after posting. Also won't he want to replace injector o-rings?

Through PM's, I offered my assistance with this work. He mentioned that it rattled at idle and went away when rev'd up. I suggested to make sure it was not the HB.
Dustin wrote:Just my ear on the S/C .I guess I can try a wood dowel or get a stethascope. I did take off the belt and it "may" have felt a little slop when I rotated back and forth. It sure sounds like "rattling" rocks as I have read. Is there another method you can suggest>?
You can also use a screwdriver held to the ear and listen to it while the engine is idling. Also, the HB would make the rattle sound from the bottom.

Any other input is welcomed.

www.rockauto.com can get what you need. It's probably called a "Plenum Gasket" and you'll also want Injector O-Rings.

Here is a part list from 00Beast LIM gasket replacement, this may help in deciding what all you will need. And while your at it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the LIM gasket if not already done so if your going to go to the trouble and take the supercharger off.

Intake Gaskets (aluminum framed): Intense? I'm ordering my kit from them, so just get that from them too?
S/C Gasket: Felpro. Have to check if it contains TB gasket.
Coolant Elbows: Dorman PN 47065.
Coolant: Prestone Mixes with any, Will get about 3 gallons.
RTV: Ultra Copper Sealant
Valve Cover Gaskets: From Advance.
Di-electric Grease: Orange Packet on counter at Advance.
Cheap Oil & Filter: to flush coolant out of bottom end. Going to switch to Amsoil, so 5 qts. of that and a filter of that as well.
Fuel Injector O-rings: 3- 4 packs.
Also this might help,

Series I
............Name..................................................Rockauto
Fel Pro
...........Fuel Injector O-rings (need 3)....................
...........Plenum (SC to LIM) gasket w/rings (L67).....
..............Throttle Body gasket (L67)........................
.........Valve Cover Gasket Set (L67)....................
..............Thermostat Housing gasket........................
..............Thermostat Seal (rubber)...........................

Dorman
..............Coolant elbow......................................... (I would recommend a GM one due to several reports of the Dorman "Help" elbows leaking)

Misc
Ultra Copper RTV ~$5
TB Cleaner/Maf Cleaner ~$5
Brake Cleaner ~$5
Blue Thread Locker ~$5

GM Dealer/Intense
Lower intake gaskets, (Aluminum Frame).............................. ~$60
GM Pipe Sealant with PTFE...................... ~$10
Superchager Oil .................................... ~$10

Josh, his car is different, and doesn't share a lot of those parts. None of the gaskets will match up.

Now would be a good time to replace the lower intake manifold gaskets as well, since they deteriorate with age. However, it's not the same parts as Series II, however the process should be somewhat similar.

If we get the parts down for him, I have offered to help do this with him through PM. I know I have all the sealants etc he may need, we just need to make sure he gets the correct Series I parts.

I do suggest doing the LIM gaskets and cleaning up the whole top end (if finances allow):

LIM gaskets
SC gasket
Injector o-rings (I have and can supply)
Thermostat and gaskets
TB gasket
water pump (if desired or age is questionable and I have gaskets for that)

The item we would have to look close at is the coolant nipple under the SC snout.

We could even do this as a mini-meet at my place if desired. I could try to get a hold of Mr Wren the series I master and see if he would want to join.

Wow..All this information and willingness to help is fantastic. I will place an order for the coupler and oil from Intense in the AM.

I was going to goto Napa for valve cover gaskets, S/C gasket. I don't mind purchasing the other item's as long as time is available. Just want to make sure they are the "CHOICE" gaskets.

Fel-Pro is the brand NAPA will have, and what you want. Your car isn't prone to the LIM failing like Series II is.

If your not in a "big hurry" Rockauto is pretty fast on shipping, place the order on Monday and usually recieve it by Wednesday or Thursday.

So I went to Napa to purchase the S/C gasket and they stock parts for a car with Vin digit K and not 1. And of coarse I have 1. I dont see that option on other online sites. Is there a difference? I would think a M-62 were all the same?

In your year it would be VIN L for the non-supercharged, and they should be able to order the gasket for your car. Or you can get it on Rock Auto. It's already broken up by VIN 1 or VIN L once you select year and body.
