yes dash cuz it was reading on target at 195. where else can i get a reading from?myfirstbonnie wrote:As for the miss, have you checked the coils? Are they that common? I did try a couple used ones from i guy i work with and it didn't cure it but maybe i'll just get a set to rule it out
What are you reading the temps on? The dash gauge is not accurate at all.

Re: OBD1 codes???
so i got some coils coming all 3! just to rule them out. outta curiosity i wanted to try the paper clip code reader and only two codes showed up after they were cleared to the prior monster list. i got 31, and 55. 31 happened earlier but 55 did not BUT 55 is not on the list for "L" vin #'s???????? for "1" vin #'s its the EGR solenoid 3. my car is definately an L i just checked it again.
on top of that is it normal for both electric fans to kick in while doing the paper clip code reading????
thanks again for all this help i'm slowly breaking this down when i have time

Re: OBD1 codes???
found the temp sensor, removed the air box and accordian air hose and got at it pretty easy! plugged her in fired her up and no dice temp gauge still reads low! sensor was only 12 bucks so thought i'd try it. back to the drawing boardprimetime2 wrote:i bought a temp sensor sending unit but can't quite find exactly where it taps into the intake? what should i remove to get at it? the engine is warm now so i can't touch it anyways!

The temp sensor in the back of the air box? That's the air intake sensor, not the coolant temp sensor. There are two, one hiding under the TB, and one hiding behind it. One of those two is for the gauge, one for the PCM. I think a scan tool with live data will help by showing you if the PCM temp is different than the gauge temp.

coolant temp sensor, the one facing the drivers front tire and tucked deep, I seen the other its right around the corner facing the rear of the car. so if i wanted a live data scan tool do i have to seek a dealer?J Wikoff wrote:The temp sensor in the back of the air box? No, well, they'll have one. But there are other tools out there that will do it. The one I have, Actron CP85 or something like that does it.

so what do you think about my dash throwing a 55?? i'm a bit confused cuz that number isn't on the trouble code list for my vin number!

Re: OBD1 codes???
Ignore the discrepency in the list. It's a valid code for you. It was probably left out because most 92 Vin L's didn't have an EGR. Most likely, the #3 EGR pintle (partly visible from the outside" has become sticky. It can be cleaned. It's been posted a few times around here how to do it.

Re: OBD1 codes???
egr is soaking right now probably gonna leave her for the night. so all three holes have a quite a bit of carbon built in there, can i just scrape it out carefully with a flathead screw driver once i'm done letting it soak?

Re: OBD1 codes???
well got the pintles to move freely and bolted her on no check engine light for that anymore! now i gotta find out whats causing the miss and why my temp won't go above 195. a guy at work mentioned it may be the intake gasket being bad but my old 3.1 ltr had that problem but i would get real hot when sitting and idling this car wont go above 170 it seems. maybe the gauge is bad or the other sensor that i didnt change out

Re: OBD1 codes???
alright so started by checking plugs and wires saturday and discovered that one plug while pulling the wire from the coil it didnt change the engine tone much at all so we pulled it and discovered it was pretty dry so we put a new plug in just to rule that out and point the finger at the injector and thats what i'm thinking it is starving that hole out and causing my miss gonna order up 6 new ones and just get it over with

Re: OBD1 codes???
You can get a pretty good rebuilt set of injectors from Fuel Injection Enterprises. You can try pulling the fuel rail, with everything connected, put little cups/jars under each injector and try starting it long enough to see if there's a difference in amount of fuel in each cup. Or swap a couple injectors around and see if the missing cylinder moves with that injector.
LIM gaskets are pretty solid pre-95. They can fail, though, but not cause a miss. It would put coolant in the oil, and that would be a bigger problem.
If your car takes a while to reach 195 and has trouble stayng that warm, you might need a new thermostat.
