New car - '08 Fusion SEL V6

Post by Hotwheels »

Well, it's been a while since I've mentioned what's been developing in the saga for a new car for my wife. We had an '02 Sonata GLS V6 with 128k that was nickeling and diming us and literally falling apart (the fit and finish was NOT good), despite regular babying from us. That, combined with the frustrations of trying to get online support and parts up here in the tundra, was getting old. We started off looking for a 08+ Malibu 2LT/LTZ V6, or Impala LTZ, and were offered a killer deal on an '04 Acura TL (newer body style). Pearl white with tan leather, moonroof, awesome stereo, A-spec body kit, bi-xenon headlights, totally decked out, with only 65k miles on it. It had a prior accident history, but I bought it from a reputable guy I've that I've bought salvage title vehicles from before, and felt ok about it. Picked it up for about 1/2 of book value, but......upon getting home (75miles away) we discovered cracks in the frame, and upon running a carfax, discovered the vehicle had been totalled TWICE. Most horrible carfax I've ever seen. By this time, other issues had started appearing with the vehicle as well. In talking the seller, he allowed us to return the vehicle and take back the check we wrote and start fresh. Thankfully, we got out of the situation, and walked away. SO....we owned an beautiful, ticking-time bomb Acura for 2 days.

Long story short, all of the Malibu LTZ's that were within reach of our budget had sold, so we moved on to pursuing a Fusion. Nearly bought a 2010 SE, but picked up this '08 SEL V6 for $3k below private party KBB value a week ago. It was owned by a 78 yr old lawyer, who recently passed away. The car came as-is, on consignment at an import dealer, still with some contents in the car, not really cleaned up much. It has 72,000 miles, a bit more than we wanted, but we couldn't complain on the price. The only issues is it will probably need 2 new tires in the not-so-distant future, and the former owner had evidently practiced the 'park by braille' method with the back bumper cover, so I just had that redone this weekend by a friend who is a pro in auto body. He also did a spectacular job buffing the whole car out, and the finish on this car looks absolutely stunning. It's getting shampooed and detailed inside tomorrow, so I'll get more pics of the interior tomorrow or Tuesday.

Image

Being the SEL, this car has the additional chrome trim, and the 17" wheels, and larger rear anti-sway bar, besides a bunch of interior upgrades. One neat feature is the illuminated entry, accompanied with puddle lights under the outside mirrors when you use the keyless entry. Inside, the trim is upgraded to "piano black" inserts on the dash, along with an analog clock, and additional chrome trim on radio and climate buttons. It also gets the in-dash 6CD/MP3 changer, trip computer, auto dimming mirrors, auto headlights, Sync system with aux/USB/bluetooth/voice commands (works so slick!), automatic climate control, as well as all of the usual power options. Another neat touch is not only a split-fold rear seat (with spring loaded trunk-mounted levers), but a fold flat passenger front seat, allowing one to haul something up to 9 feet long in the car. It has a surprisingly large trunk, and a back seat that is perfectly comfortable for 2 adults.

Image
Image

Just can't stop admiring the paint color and finish on this car.....9 out of 10 people think it's black, but it's "Dark Ink Blue" metallic. Has a really nice blue highlight to it in direct sunlight.

Being the V6 model, this one has the aluminum 3.0L DOHC 24V V6, 221hp, with a 6 speed automatic, and dual exhaust. It's not as torquey as a 3800, is smooth, quiet and has a nice growl when you get on it. It really takes off above 3500rpm - It has no problem lighting up the front tires and pulls QUITE hard at WOT. 0-60 is in about 7.0-7.2 sec. Mileage is still respectable - I don't have official hand-calculated figures yet, but while cruising at a steady 60mph, the computer was reading a steady 30MPG.

Loving it so far - can't believe how good the handling and power is - very sporty and solid for a American family sedan. Drives very European in some ways. We test drove the Fusion back to back with a 2009 Impala LT, and were shocked to find that this actually was smoother and quieter on the road, yet offered drastically better handling and power. The back seat was actually no more roomy in the Impala than in this Fusion (the trunk was bigger though). With the extra features and trim of the SEL, I really don't miss the Acura that much any more :)

Sucks to hear about the Acura! At least nobody got hurt! I like the color of the fusion. My friend's parent's have a 2009/10 Fusion in that bright red color. It has everything but the V6. Still a nice car to drive. Hope it does well for you. :)

Just got the car shampooed today - it's great for it to finally be clean! Here's some pics of the interior:

Being an SEL, it has the "piano black" accents, extra chrome trim on the audio/climate buttons, and the analog clock. It also gets the auto-dimming mirrors, Sync, auto climate control, leather steering wheel, trip computer, and auto headlights.
Image

Really like the interior color combo, but the carpeting is going to be a pain to keep clean. All-weather floor mats are already on order!

Image

Analog clock is a nice, upscale touch.

Image

Steering wheel controls for cruise, audio, phone, and voice command functions. And, they're lighted at night, a pet peeve of mine on other vehicles.

Image

Gauge cluster is kinda cool looking - kind of a 3D effect.

Image

Back seat is roomy and comfortable for adults.

Image

Not only do the back seats fold, but the passenger seats folds, allowing objects up to 9ft long to be hauled.

Image

Love getting previous older-people cars - they clean up sooo nice!

Image

Trunk is spacious, and features strut hinges and a big opening.

Image

Another nice touch is the spring loaded, trunk mounted levers for folding the rear seats.

Nice ride man! Looks beautiful all shined up like that. Ford has yet to come up with an unpleasant shape for the Fusion. Always liked the way they looked.

I particularly like the analog clock and the folding seats. My mom's Enclave has an analog clock, even though it's completely redundant due to the radio clock display I think it's a cool upscale touch.

I don't know if my Malibu's front seat folds down but I do know that the rear seats don't fold down completely flat like yours do.

You know, I noticed the exact same thing about the Impala's backseat...as big as the car is, the backseat room just isn't as big as you'd think it should be. Midsize cars like the Fusion are easily trumping it in this area!

Does it have a manumatic? How many speeds?

Nice ride for sure! It's easy to see why the Fusion so highly regarded in this segment!

Thanks!

I kinda wish I could've gotten something with the heated seats/leather/moonroof like yours, as yours definitely comes off as being more luxurious, but there are enough thoughtful touches and details throughout the car to keep me satisfied. Sync has become one of my new favorite toys to play with and impress friends with! With all these voice commands, etc., we used to see this stuff in sci-fi movies 10-15 yrs. ago, and laugh it off. It's truly amazing to see how far things have come.

As far as manumatic? No, unfortunately, not on this one. It's a 6 speed automatic, and is very smooth and responsive - always seems to be in the right gear, yet cruises at about 1700-1800rpm at 60mph. The SelectShift manumatic trans came out in 2010 Fusions, V6's only. It would be fun to have, as we had it on our V6 Sonata prior to this, but it's not a must.

Sync is indeed a really cool feature. Ford had some great insight coming out with that and having it available throughout their lineup!

I have to agree that the lack of manumatic isn't a deal killer for me either. So far I've only used it once just to try it out, but I found that the computer does a much better job of shifting on it's own. The manumatic really shines (as I've discovered on our Enclave) when doing spirited driving around mountain roads with lots of sharp turns and massive elevation changes. But that only comes around once in a while!

Good on Ford for giving you a six speed to take advantage of that V6! I wasn't sure if it was a 5 or 6 speed. Having a 6 automatically puts it at an advantage over its import competitors from the same year.

These are great cars, my dad has a 2008 SEL V6, Black/Black leather. Needed nothing other than oil changes, tires, and rear brakes in almost 130,000KM. Still drives and handles like new.

That's a really great looking car. I love the colors, especially the interior, even if it is a beast to keep clean. It looks like it's a 2012 just off the show room floor.

When I wash our cars, I dry them with microfiber towels. I spray a good amount of Turtle Wax, "Wax and Dry" onto the towels. If you spray it onto the car, it streaks and it's very difficult to get it off. I use the towels with the "Wax and Dry" on everything exterior, glass, wheels, and all. It doesn't leave a white film or change the color of the black exterior trim. It sure makes the cars shine and stay clean longer.

I tried Eagle One, but it leaves a white film on the black plastic exterior pieces because it has carnuba wax in it.

When I had the new wheels put on the wife's car, I used Meguiar's NXT 2 gen wax all over them, and I mean all over. I don't want to see any rust of any kind any where on those rims - lol - BC

Thanks, I really like the color combo as well. I've really liked the cream color interiors on some of the later-model Mopar products (amongst others), just wish this came with the black carpeting, like the Mopars. I ordered dealer-accessory all-weather mats that should help keep the carpeting looking good however, and should fit the car like a glove. With the snowstorms we're getting right now, I'm anxious for them to arrive!

Speaking of showroom floor, I was at the Ford dealer the other day, and was looking at a new 2012 SEL V6, with the extra-cost Candy Red paint job ($395). I was surprised to see it had more orange peel than my car! I am very pleased with how well the buffing turned out - very deep, glossy, and free of orange peel now.

Dan - after driving the car today, after a 10" snowstorm, I'm wishing the car had a manumatic feature or more options for a 2nd gear start. The car is geared so well, performance-wise, that gear #1 of 6 is low enough, it could really use a 2nd start option. Unfortunately, this just has the "PRNDL" arrangement. Very pleased with the transmission performance otherwise.

I have to admit, I've become quite taken with it for fun's sake...but I can see the practicality of it in your situation. The capability to start in 2nd or 3rd gear is almost useless in my part of the country.

But just think, come summertime you'll be glad for that low first gear. I know I am.

I still can't believe that car's not waxed in the first set of pictures. Throw some glaze and Meguiars #26 on it and you'll be able to see it from outer space.

Great looking car. The paintwork is stunning. Might be common over there but would certainly turn heads over here, especially one looking that nice.
