Crunched up the SSEi...Estimates?

Post by DealMeN »

My beloved '01 SSEi was unjustly defaced by a red-light-runner over the weekend. I had a weird, uncomfy feeling when they took her to the repair shop for an estimate.

I'd be interested in the forum opinion on how much this will cost to fix. The other driver's insurance company has already accepted full liability, so hopefully the estimate and repair will go quickly. Here are some pics and details of the car:

'01 SSEi
Perfect dark gray interior
No damage anywhere else
90k miles, recently did tune up and LIM gaskets

Wheel well/ quarter panel doesn't look good there.

If the car is mint with nothing else with it, I'd guess they might fix it.

But it looks like damage that would normally total a car.

Sorry to say, but with that kind of damage on an 11-year-old car, it will be totalled.

Your only saving grace would be the lower miles.

Man, I hope that you guys are wrong! I spent a good 4mo. last year looking for the right SSEi and I just put $1k into getting it all tuned up, '03 wheels and new CS4s, having the LIM work done.

Just so I'm prepared in case it comes to that...According to NADA (which I've been told is what insurance companies use), the clean RETAIL value is as follows: Base $6.1 + Low Miles $1.3 + Sunroof + 0.3 ~= $7.7k. Clean trade in is $5.5k total.

agree with Andrew above, way to much body work to be done at a hit like that.

I would have to agree on it being totaled as well. If it was just the door then you would be fine, but that area of the quarter panel is not an easy repair as there is likely a lot of damage and stuff that would need to be taken care of that we can't see from the pics under that panel and the panels that attach to it.

I concur with totalled. Might be able to get it fixed with a salvage or rebuilt title, but then selling it in the future would be very hard...

my opinion is you are looking high 3K for that repair...
depends if the unibody got twisted.

from what i remember adjusters tend to total a car in general if the repair is more than half the value.
The body shop manager i knew said they total an older car after $2500 in damage.

hope you can convince them to fix it. it looked pretty nice.

I'm inclined to say that it's totalled also. However,

If the rear sub-frame isn't bent and no suspension damage, I don't see any broken glass, all the really needs to be done is a new door shell. Then any competent body ship can fix the rear quarter panel/door jamb area fairly easily. If this damage had gone any further back into the quarter and even caused damage to the rear suspension in addition to sub-frame damage, then it would be 110% total.

Even if the could get it back into shape, I would question the structural integrity of the vehicle; and I doubt it would have the same "feel" going down the road when you pushed the performance envelope. Sorry for your loss

Thanks for all the feedback! It looks like I'll have to wait a couple of days to find out, b/c the insurance adjuster doesn't seem to be in a hurry to check it out. The other driver's insurance is paying for my rental car, so I guess I'm ok with them taking a few days.

When you meet with the adjuster, make sure to emphasize the lower miles, have the receipts for the work you just had done, tires, etc. That all will play into whether they total or fix the car.

if it were I, I would buy it back from the insurance if totaled and have it fixed. Tire/wheel looks straight up and down so looks like no supension damage hopefully. Alot of insurance companies tend to total cars more quickly than used too for the simple reasons they dont deal with the body shop and like my daughter they pressured her into taking a lesser buy out, she had a 2006 taurus, hence the reason for a lot of rebuit titles out there.

The estimate came back today...$3800 for:
-replacement door
-pull out / fix the damaged quarter panel (no bondo)
-paint/blend everything
-new wheel and tire
-alignment

It is supposed to be done in 2 weeks. I feel pretty good about the body shop; they've been honest on deals in the past and they at least told me they don't bow down to Insurance Co. shortcuts.

Also, the new wheel is due to scuffing and the new tire because it was cut. They don't see any brake or suspension damage.

Wow, glad to see it's being fixed. I'm sure $3800 was right on the fringe of fix/scrap...

$3800 damage and they didn't total it?!?

Based on KBB's values, thats 70% of the vehicles worth.

You must have had some really big puppy eyes.

sometimes all it takes is a reasonable conversation with the adjuster, and having the body shop on your side helps.
the adjuster must have been in a good mood too.

He's got new parts that'll help him "up" the value atleast at this moment.

Hopefully it's only cosmetic damage, not involving any frame straightening.
