You put your elbow in.........

Post by SLEking »

Is there another name for coolant elbows because auto zone seems to be oblivious to what they actually are.

No other name I know of. Part number is: Dorman HELP! 47065
http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... 18&t=23252

May be worth a trip to the dealer, I and some others have had issues with Dorman's leaking after a while. My GM elbows are holding up so far. Otherwise be sure to use some RTV sealant on the new elbows.

Some might call them heater hose elbows.

Make certain that where the elbows are inserted is cleaned well. There is a ridge that will often form around where the O-ring was in the tensioner, LIM and front cover. If that area is not smooth when the new elbows are inserted, they will leak.

I have yet to experience a problem with the Dorman elbows. The only one that I did have trouble with was years ago with a GM elbow that warped, and then cracked.

Heater Bypass elbows is another name I've heard.

You can use the HELP 47065 elbows, but I go to the dealer and get the $1.42 O-ring for the end that goes into the LIM. I also get some water pump gasket maker to use as lube and ensure a good seal -I had been using the HELP elbows as they came along with Ultra Black RTV but that was giving me nightmares after 20+ had be redone in November/December alone. They were coming back in as little as 3-4 days.
I always made sure the sealing surfaces were CLEAN and not scratched, but recently had went as far as putting the installing the coolant elbows with the Ultra Black and letting it cure for 24+ hrs before putting coolant in or starting the engine and still they would leak.
I did find that the HELP 47065 O-rings were flattening/shrinking in as little as a couple hrs of run-times.

I figured since the plastic elbows themselves were fine and the dealer wants almost 4x the price of the HELP! 47065 elbow set I would replace the o-ring that always was the culprit on the HELP elbows with the GM o-ring which I found to be only like $1.5x after taxes. I ended up ordering 30 of them, which will probably get me through 2 months.

Not trying to be a D*&K but why when one idiot at an autoparts store doesnt know something do people blame the entire corporation? There are probably PLENTY of Autozone employees that do know what a coolant elbow is. On the other side of that there are prolly TONS who dont and why would you expect every one to know every single part on every single car ever manufactured?

Just a pet peeve of mine.

Those elbows I sent are used. I would buy new if I were you. I just sent them with because they were on the part originally.

Marty, what is the part number for those o-rings? I think I might pick some up as well.

Local parts stores didn't understand my names for the elbows either... I started rambling off names and they were able to locate them by this name..
