Headlight options

Ok one thing I need to get strait, the 04 Bonneville uses the 9005 and 9006 bulbs correct? Which is for the high beam and which one is the low?

I can't agree more with those recommending against pnp hid. Its a copout and looks like full on clown shoes. What makes it even more frustrating is that I go to the effort and expense of retrofitting and I get tickets for 35% window tint while ppl drive by in pickups with 10000K hid kits.

So, my advise is to either do a retro or put a relay harness and your choice of bulbs in. Hir can be nearly as bright as hid, if you boost the voltage as I have, they're signifigantly brighter than hid.

SO, I also have hesitations about hir, seing as how its still overpowering the reflector.

Some cars have an acceptable beam patter for hid. I'm a realist. I don't think it looks good and the results are underwealming.

Those are my headlights. actually now I have different shrouds and more leds, but rich did my retro and is a stand up guy. it was winter and I was busy when I decided to do a retro so I farmed it out.

Send him an email. He won't want to do another fx retro on bonneville headlights, but something smaller would be more realistic. He said mine was the hardest retro he's ever done.

Well that's comforting, as I prepare to put a set of FX-R in my spare headlights

Though I'm sure the Morimoto Mini wasn't that much easier, if at all.

Jerry, I think it depends on how you mount them and whether you retain the stock aiming hardware. Also having the car with you makes rotational alignment much easier. That's where we had the most problems.

Also, I retroed an 01 grand prix with mini h1s and although it was a pita, I was impressed with how compact they were to be able to fit in those beady little housings.

The Morimoto Mini H1 still was too big to have any thread stick out the back of the housing, which meant a full retro. I ditched the reflector and the low beam aiming too (aimed them on the car before sealing everything up).

My fx are epoxied to the remnants of the low beam reflector so they're still aimable. The aiming hardware is crap though so its more or less not worth it.

On the gp I did with mh1s I had to grind the bulb holder down a bunch to give the nut a place to sit. Turns out, the bulb holder wasn't perpendicular to the car so carefully measuring my depth while grinding it down was a waste. Ended up being crosseyed anyway. Lots of trimming on those things. Have I mentioned lately that I hat grand prix?

I did the full HIR upgrade with relay harnesses on my 95, and they are just stupid bright! Definitely a great upgrade. Around here where I live only the silly ricers put HIDs in their halogen housings. The ones who want usable bright light go the projector route.

Did your buddy get you those clear turn signal reflectors? Are they custom?

On mine? They're actually made from the refractor material you'd see on a flourecsent light fixture with a light spray of black spray paint.

Oh man, that's a great idea. I might copy you on that. Cleared corners look a little TOO clear for me sometimes. I can't stand seeing the bulb for some reason.

I despise pnp hids. Never had em and never will. Maybe its cause all the ones around here are lifted trucks... But i have the answer for that , with the quad highbeams and the led lightbar , pnpers have no choice but to pull over.

You've got me looking at those light bars now. I remember looking at the vision-x stuff a while back thinking there was no way id pay that, but for the kind of output you can get, there are some decent options.

Well even when im running halogens i have 8000lm hiding waiting for unsuspecting assholes. For a driving light they are the best option imo. More reliable than hid , more light per watt , no warm up time. And now you can get them in all shapes and sizes. Ive had really good experience with rigid industries , their duallys and d2' s fit anywhere , and are uber bright. Now they have a single row 10"bar that makes 5200lm , that thing is crazy , check out their site , look at the single row lightbars and look at 6" or 10" spectres. Absolutely nuts.

PnP Xenons just make the same output brighter. Projectors have the light located in better areas, and much more consistent in output across the whole lit up area.

I did actually aim mine lower in the silvarado.

So what's the point?

Actually pnp kit bulbs don't always give the same beam pattern as stock.
