93 SE blinkers not working

Post by swearingsailor »

I have a few issues with my new Bonneville - a 93 SE. My blinkers are not working. I've had other vehicles that have had similar problems with blinkers. The lever seems to work and move fine, clicks up and clicks down, and everything else on the "stem" works, window wipers, cruise etc...

I've checked the fuse box under the drivers side dash, and all the fuses are fine, and I can hit the emergency flashers and they work fine, so I know its not bulbs. Is there another fuse box that I could check? Or should I be more concerned with the wiring in the steering wheel itself?

A wiring diagram would be great if anyone has one for a 93se steering column (console shift, not column shift).

Thanks in advance!

You might wanna check the Flasher. if you have not already. i know when that goes out you lose turn signals but unsure about hazards. its about a 4 dollar part IIRC.

where would that be located? The hazards work, so i concluded that the flasher was working, but they may be on different circuits....i really need to get a chilton or haynes for this car :)

If the hazards work, my thoughts would move to the turn signal switch, in the steering column, as the next option.

you have two flasher units one for turn sig one for 4 way flashers - I think you can swap them to see if the turn signals come back

Thanks for the info everyone :) I was just going to post that I figured out the problem because there are two flashing units, one for blinkers and one for hazards, but RPACODY beat me to the punch.

Thanks for the input guys and gals, thats 1 of the numerous small things that I needed to fix. Still haven't had the time to check out the shifter problem yet, but hopefully saturday ill have enough light to get'er done. When i can afford an exhaust system, Ill get that done, but for now it will stay loud. So far it doesn't seem loud enough to warrant any attention from the law enforcement, but I have been careful too.

I just don't understand how they pick and choose who to pull over for loud exhaust, I hear some trucks and cars in town that are sooo loud and abnoxious that there is no reason they are not getting pulled over, but I got pulled over the other day in my suburban with fairly quiet but rumbly exhaust. He asked me if my muffler felll off...and then looked confused when he looked it over and saw a fully legal exhaust system, including cats, mufflers and tailpipes. He just told me to stay off the pedal.

Usually when the lights come on but don't blink the blinker is bad. If they don't come on at all its a switch problem...

If I had a scanner I'd upload the diagrams for you. If you find the turn signal flasher, make sure the blue wire has constant +12v and the purple wire switches between 12v and 0v. From there it goes to the switch, which chooses which side to blink. At the blinker, if you have 12v on the blue but no blink on the purple you can test the switch by connecting the purple to the blue with a jumper wire. The lights should come on but not blink.

Remember, the switch only chooses the side that gets power.

i swapped the flashers and the blinkers worked and the hazards didn't, so it was the flasher. new part from advanced for around 3 bucks and all is well.

I also figured out the shifter problem, the key was stuck in the ignition and the shifter button wouldn't come out. I pulled the knob off and the plastic inner rod was bent and not pshing down with the button. I just took a vicegrip and straightened that rod, and shot some silicon based lube spray down the shaft. Works perfectly.

Also scored a set of brand new tires on cl for 100$ bucks, came off a wrecked grand prix and they still have the nipples and stickers on them. Goodyear Integrity, not the best but not bad for 100 bucks.

now all the small things (besides the radio, which will be replaced on saturday) are finished, and the exhaust willl be done next week.

thanks for the help guys! been too cold out to take pics, besides, the car is covered in ice and snow. ill get some when it is warmer :)
