New guy with Fuel Fill issue

Post by Ryan from Ohio »

I just picked up a 2000 SLE last night off a guy I know.

He told me when you fill it you have to stop around a gallon otherwise fuel will shoot out the filler at you.

He also told me there is a ping pong ball like check in the filler pipe. To just undo the pipe at the rubber hose and run something down it to bust it out.

Is this correct or is there more to it?

I trust the guy pretty well, but I dont want to just do this and find out Im going to get a code on the dash... Also Ive never done anything like this, just want to make sure the info he gave me is accurate.

BTW 2000 SLE with 113K on it. Got the rust around the fuel cap and about 1/2 a dollar bill worth on the pass door. Nice car otherwise.

I fiddled with it some today. I could not get the filler neck to come out. I took the top hose clamp off. Not sure if there is more to it- so I buttoned it up and called it a day.

Also I noticed it appears the filler neck is fairly new. The edge around the cap looks a bit rusty/crappy. There is a white parts sticker on it and the sticker looks new.

At this point I said heck with it, going to a mechanic thats better than me. Im not one to get under cars and I most certainly am not going to drop the fuel tank.

The outside of the filler isn't really exposed to much, so I'd bet it's the original.

There is no valve inside of the filler, but there is one that leads to the evaporative emissions canister. I'd bet that's what's bad.

I Agree that its most likely the EVAP Canister.... Unless the car has the glow stick mod...lol

I am wondering if anyone knows if a 2005 sle has two vent solenoids. Because i had one changed and i dont know if it was front or rear. But what i do know is that my "check gas cap light" is still on ,as well SEL.

Things can get confusing when it comes to what those things are called. This part is under the hood looks like this and Rock Auto has it listed as a Vapor Canister Purge Valve.

[The extension jpg has been deactivated and can no longer be displayed.]

This part is under the car near the rear wheel, and is listed as a Vapor Canister Solenoid.

[The extension jpg has been deactivated and can no longer be displayed.]

If either part is defective, it will set the check gas cap code.

It may be called the vent valve.

Have you checked for rust around the top of the filler tube? Have you replaced the gas cap?

That's because it is likely just a switch, not a sensor, and it just tells the PCM whether it's acceptable or not acceptable.
