Hello All!!

Post by defretted »

Well, I stumbled upon the forum a few weeks back, and I'm finally getting around to doing this!
My name is Tim, and I have been a lifetime GM guy. Big believer in the 3800, too.

My current ride is a 92 SE with F41. 88xxx miles, I bought it in March with 79xxx miles... And I am the second owner of this garage kept beauty. Unfortunately the factory L27 started to knock after a month, so I dropped in a Salvage 92 Olds motor with claimed 81xxx miles. Found out at that time the trans is a Jasper rebuild... Feels good, fluid looks good.
Of course there are the usual stupid GM problems  , and thats what brought me here in the first place!!

Previous ride was an 88 LE that also was a 1 owner 79K car that I got 6 years and many many miles out of. Odo stopped working at 158K, but I suspect actual mileage was in the 225k range.
Among others, notable GM cars were a 98 GP GTP, 00 GP GTP, 88 Olds 98 with 290K, and a 98 Z24 5speed I bought new.

So far, I have found this forum an invaluable source of info. Seems to be a great bunch here with plenty of real world know-how.

:beerchug: Here's to big, old American Iron!!! :beerchug:

Welcome to the forum...

a lot of the 91-93 3800 L27's had some issues( the 3300 V6 had the same issues )....

There were some main bearing clearance issues starting with the #1 main, this would also damage the #1 cam bearing over time and you know the rest of the story...

Glad you found another motor and have kept the car going... There were no SE's with F41 after 1993... If you had FE2 chances were quite good you had an SSE or SSEi, or an SLE with the added FE2 suspension...

But that 92-93 F41 is a good driving, handling 4 door sedan for what it is... Its a keeper for sure and most don't think a Big car should drive like that...

Poly end links will do you a world of good too as your car has the large sway bars... 32mm front and 22mm rear...lol

HAHA!!! Yep, it was at the #1 end. Didnt look at the mains, but #1 rod was loooose!!

Yeah, the first time I went under it, I noticed the sway bars looked pretty big. At that time I didn't know F41 from abc123.
It definitely handles more like my GTP's than my 88 LE...

Yeah that #1 was really common...

1995 was the Only L27 that was built with the series II crank, and series II oil pan.. was an interesting motor to say the least..

in 93 GM changed the piston ring technology a bit, went to a higher compression piston( 91-92 8.5 : 1, 93-95 9.0 : 1 compression and added roller pivots for the rocker arms )... Then in 95 they went to the series II Crank and slightly lighter rods, harmonic balancer was 95 only as well..

But in 91 the L27 was rated at 170 Hp and 225 ft Lbs...... in 1995 it was still rated at 170 Hp and 225 Ft Lbs...LOL... Leave it to GM...

The ratings may just be numbers they picked out of their arse...I wouldn't be surprised, and logic tells me the "freak" L27 (95) makes more power than the 92-93...lol :btruestory:

If you can find stock times for a 95 Regal with the L27, you'll believe that even more.
