Gary and i are on our holidays and thought we'd rent a Smart Car for the day to take a drive up to Kincardine, Ontario.
I've always wanted to drive one and was actually surprised by how peppy they are. Changing gears without a clutch takes some getting use to. We put 700 Kms on it and boy does my body feel it today. This old body needs a wider wheelbase....lmao!
For a days rental and 200 Kms free + the 500 extra Kms we put on the bill was $145. We got about 486 Kms on $23 of diesel

Those are the only wheels I think I can remember seeing 3 bolts on. That would probably make it tough to get new wheels.
I still wouldn't mind test driving one. It'd probably be fun, but I think I would get tired of it real quick. Especially after the first time I needed to haul anything bigger than a microwave.

Had her doing 130 and even managed to pass a transport and Honda, mind you i was going down hill and had 1 mile of visability....lmao!

You could probably push the microwave I mentioned earlier and pass most Honda though... Ok, just kidding, they're not that bad.
I have heard they are pretty peppy. Did you see any of the videos on youtube where they crash tested them? Those are tough little boxes. They did a crash test at like 60mph into a concrete slab and the passenger compartment was still in good shape. Although the impact alone would fook anyone up beyond repair...
Looks like a fun car, but I'd still rather be in something much larger to have that extra cushion of crumple in a high speed accident.

Those run on diesel? I thought they were gas, or maybe the US ones are. They are basically a rollcage with body panels, an engine and suspension bolted on. They are pretty tough.

Ok, cool. I bet the diesel ones get better mileage, but it is probably a wash, since diesel is soooo much higher than gas.

This would be a perfect little rental car for two people, looks like it would be fun too!
That being said, I really don't see the point of these cars unless you live in an urban jungle, where parking spots are hard to come by.
If you want something small that gets around 34mpg, why not get something like a Chevy Cobalt, or even a Honda Fit, which would get even better gas mileage, and you would have a back seat, and useable storage.
I still wouldn't mind taking one for a spin though!

Awesome! I stopped at the Smart dealership in Bloomfield a couple months ago and was VERY tempted to lay down $99 to order one, too. I figured if nothing else, I could resell it on ebay for a little more than I paid for it considering the 20 month wait list. If the gas mileage was a little better I'd buy one. 42 MPG isn't all that good considering how small they are. My Civic is double the size of a Smart car and still get 39.5 MPG. I'll give up 2.5 MPG for a car double the size....
