Prestone "Mixes with any" is a popular choice. Though, it's not green.

If you have green in the car right now, it's best to stick with it. If you don't know for sure, the mixes with any should be safe.

Just flush the whole system out with water really well and use the Prestone "Mixes with any" coolant.

I saw your article a few days ago (great work). That's what made me aware of the DEX problem and then realized the '02 SSEi I just bought still had the original DEX coolant in it (67K miles). There is a brown tacky film coating the inside of the system. I followed the backflush procedures found on this site and now have water and Peak Super Cleaner and Flush running in it. The cleaner doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot to the brown film. I plan to back flush everything again and put the green Prestone in this weekend.
What size hole to you reccomend drilling in the thermostat? I put two 1/8" holes in a factory 195 for this flush/cleaning and noticed it takes a while to get to 195.

You don't need holes for flushing, just get the car up to temp. You want that thermostat to open as early as possible and stay open for the flush to be effective, especially this time of year.
In your climate (fairly cold winters) I'd be considering a 1/16" diameter hole (only one) in both of your cars. 180° would be fine in either, year-round with that size hole.
Your biggest issue at this point is going to be the lower intake manifold gaskets and coolant elbows on BOTH cars. The damage has been done already. Now that you've prevented further damage, you need to repair what's already happened. I'd suggest also doing the valve cover gaskets at the same time for convenience.

All the advice given above is dead on.
Make sure you clean out the overflow tank good too. I took mine completely out and used a bottle brush to get it all out.
Also make sure to bleed the air out of the system by using the little screw on top of the thermostat housing.You'll need to do it 2-3 times to get it all out.

None of the long-life Dex-Cool branded anti-freezes (other than perhaps GM Dexcool itself?) use 2-EHA which is the acid that softens plastic. All of the ones I'm familiar with (Prestone, Shell, Chevron, Auto-zone) use Carboxylate for the corrosion inhibitor which is the same organic acid used in the "mixes with any" type anti-freeze. If you're in doubt, go to the manufacturers website and pull up the MSDS.
The only difference is the "mixes-with-any" antifreeze include silicates which is what the OAT technology intended to replace. Silicates are added to resist corrosion, but they get depleted after two years / 30,000 miles or so. It's the primary component in green anti-freeze. Ford and Chrysler use these Hybrid coolants, as do many foreign manufacturers. Orange (Dex-Cool) coolant contains no silicates.
None of the above makes any difference for the intended application, as it's probably best to use regular old green anti-freeze.
