Dianostic codes without a scanner.

I hooked up an OBD-II scanner and it said "no connection detected", I then checked out the site and found the OBD-I plug, and it looks nothing like the one on my car. Can someone please help me out. My "service engine soon" light keeps coming on, but when i shut off the car it goes out. Then sometimes, when i start the car it comes on, but it goes off. I don't know what it could be. Please give me some feedback. I was talking to Lucas and he suggested I post a thread, so here goes nothing i guess.

My 94 SE has an OBD2 connector under the dash on the drivers side. Only gives OBD1 info (OBD1.5), but it plugs in just fine. Is your ALDC (assemly line diagnostic connector) square looking, or does it have rounded-off corners? If you have the square-shaped connector, you should be able to read codes by shorting "a" and "h" terminals when light is on and count flashes on the check engine light. Been a long time since I have counted flashes......maybe someone else can chime in here?

For 95 and 94, you need a scanner capable of the OBD 1 & 2 hybrid system. Usually called OBD 1.5 . You can't get codes without one.

I got a Code Scout 2500 scanner with a special cable for the GM 1995 (Bonne SE 3.8). It scans and reads 2 codes (check engine light has been on for several years, says the previous owner.)

Just replaced the CPS and the car runs fine now. Starts every time and no more stalls.

How do I clear the codes from the car? They do not clear using the scanner (which the instructions explain for OBD I.)

You could disconnect the battery and touch the cables together for a bit. That should clear the codes.

Sorry it's taking so long to get back, my computer has been down. But My ALDC has rounded corners. A friend said that it could be my back manifold because the "doughnut" gasket blew out and it may be getting hot.

An exhaust leak like that can't set a code. Reading your first post is confusing. Does the light come on and stay on? If so, get it scanned and report the code here.

As stated, you need an OBD1 scanner with an OBD2 connector.

It comes on and goes back off. I don't have a OBD-1 scanner, and nobody I know still uses obd-1. Is there anyway to use a paperclip and check the codes that way???

93 was the last year for that. Get on the phone with local auto parts stores and repair shops until you find a shop that can read a 94/95 hybrid OBD1 car with an OBD2 connector, and report the codes back here.

Atom, most of those packages are severely lacking, most of our members aren't up to the task, and most of them don't read manufacturer-specific codes.
