Go to Harbor Freight, pick an ohm meter up for $3.99, or the same one (different brand) at your local Walmart for $13.99. Only true way to know the impedance.

swampthing wrote:Jedwards, that cannot be the case with the bose, when I replaced my stock rear 6x9s I used infinity speakers thinking that I would keep the correct impedance, but it didn't. My sound was cut in half, and when I disconnected one speaker, effectively making the load 2ohm . The single speaker that was connected got louder
I'll have to measure again when I'm back there, but I can almost swear both my stock rears were 2 ohm wired in series.

You have to understand that JBL and Infinity 2 ohm speakers are measured at a set of frequencies-- They aren't true 2 ohm speakers, or they would not work on 99% of car stereos = BAD IDEA for anyone trying to sell car speakers. Your "2 ohm" Infinity's are actually 4 ohm the way the amp sees it.

I've measured JBL 2 ohms on a scope at various frequencies and they aren't what they claim to be, I'd guess the same is true for Infinity. Marketing hype and nothing more.

If someone replaced the HU with one out of an older car it may say bose instead. I'm not sure whether it's in the HU that says bose or if the amp tells the HU what to say. I'm leaning towards the former.

Glad i read this thread before making my purchase.

I have an 02 SSEi w/ 8 speaker bose i just replaced head unit with pioneer simply cuz the CD did not work on the Bose nor does the 12 disk changer in the trunk.

Here is my reason for posting...
I seem to have a blown (factory) 6x9 it makes loud popping sound at very high volume with heavy base. I check the speakers with an ohm meter and it reads 2.0 so i found nice infinity kappas 2 ohm that i was about to purchase but i thought i would check here before doing so. Now that i have read that the originals are actually 1 ohm does anyone have a cheap solution? Maybe someone upgraded there system and has there old originals collecting dust? I cant see spending $100.00 for 1 stock speaker http://mnrelectronics.com/delbos6x9spe.html

Another thought i had was... does anyone make a low watt (35) Subwoofer in an enclosure that i could just plug into instead of the factory speakers?

i'm open to suggestions ]

You guys are correct, it is Monsoon not Bose the previous owner must have put a Bose HU in it

Ok, then you should be able to replace with any 2ohm speakers (I recommend infinity) and have good sound.

Jedwards stated that he thinks that the infinity speakers aren't really 2ohm. But even if they aren't they are closer then a regular 4ohm speaker. I replaced all my 2ohm bose speakers with infinity and the sound quality and volume are very good

ok cool
Now is it true that the back door speakers are 4 ohm and front door speakers are 2 ohm like the ones in the back deck?

So wiring 4 ohm speakers in the fronts while keeping the tweeters connected would keep the correct ohms, correct?
Thanks

I haven't ever tried it but that seems to be logical, what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Well I don't know what it will sound like with the stock tweeter and an aftermarket speaker hooked together. If I got anymore speakers I would probably get a set of infinity components for the front and replace the stock tweeter with that.

I'll give it a try and let everyone know how it sounds, do you have a step by step for taking off the door panel by chance? Don't particularly want to break anything.

Thanks

using the instructions above i did get to install the b1 bass module that i have had for years splicing the amp to the Bose factory harness it sounds good gives me some nice punch. only thing is that if i crank it for a while it cuts out.. after it resets its back to normal so it feels like its drawing our of the radio causing it over heat

Any suggestions besides yank it out and replace

**Update**
So being the over curious person that I am p pulled the control wire off the amp disconnecting it from the Bose all day zero issues going to re-plumb the control wire and try again...

I blew one of the rear deck speakers in my 2000 SSEi Bose system. I am getting different info from posters here and mechanics that have seen the car. What is the truth?

1) Only GM can replace that speaker because only Bose makes an amplified 2-ohm speaker.
2) I have to buy speakers in sets.
3) The speaker is not amplified, but aftermarket fit is not known.
4) Crutchfield automated lookup says the Alpine Alpine 500SPR69 'Fits' but the manual says it's 4 ohm, I think replacement must be 2 ohm?

I only want to replace the blown speaker, I cannot entertain $$$ aftermarket solutions. My only alternative is to wear headphones and use MP3 player, that's illegal in my state.

TIA

You should try and locate a stock replacement speaker pm harofreak00 and check with him first

Will do if I can figure out how to do that. I called the dealer once they opened Monday AM, they said the speakers are discontinued and that they MAY be able to procure a used speaker for $91 through a middleman that buys and sells used car equipment.

Doesn't sound shady, does it? Thanks, hope to be chatting with harofreak00 if I figure out how to do so...

If you find aftermarket 4 ohm speakers, you can wire those up in parallel and still get your 2 ohm load. :btruestory:
