Help! I'm back,
Had tire rotation and balance, asked to align front and rear. Was told rear needed shim kit to bing it in. $16.00 each side, not bad ,2 hrs work $70.00 an hour, that's bad.
Went second location, told my problem would not be solved with a rear alignment and I'm within specs.
PROBLEM: At 62 to 70 mph. car begins to shake, vibration, felt badly in driver seat. Then when hitting a road bump car seems to go over it and land twisted so the car "SWAYS" back and forth(right and left).
Tried new tire for one with very minute out of round situation, no resolution same problem, so it wasn't the tire.
He wants car to check out rear end.
Is there a rear sway bar, or something simple that could be wrong?
I have a very tiny leak in one shock, but no bouncing of car, so we figure that to is not the problem. :dontknow:

Classic shake in these cars. Some think its in the trans or the axles. How do your sway bar endlinks look?

My assumption is that they are in the front & I'd have been told about them being bad if they were.
Are there sway bars in the rear that could be causing this issue? Possibly Trans mounts or motor mounts in front???

There is a sway bar in the rear, there is no way it could cause a shake like this. It's gotta be something that moves or rotates with the wheel. Have you checked the alignment links on the rear?

My parents had a shake in the rear of their Park Avenue Ultra (02) and new Monroe Sensa-Trac shocks were the fix. Kinda perplexed me that they fixed a shake/shimmy, but they did.

also sounds like shocks to me. Unbeknownst to me, one went out a couple years ago. Then when the other one went a couple months later (found the telltale puddle in the garage), the back of the car would hop to the side when I went over things like railroad tracks.

Spoke with my mechanic bud, Mon will chk out rear end. He's guessing sway bushing, or a bushing of some sort. If shocks, have already contacted supplier bud to get them quick.
Will keep y'al posted.

Well folks,
This Mon. was a good day!
Went to mechanic friend, checked out rearend, found not a slightly leaking shock ,but "SHOT" shocks.
Also looked at swaybar links.
Got parts(those ma822 airs, moogshock mounts, and the links) y'al suggested. Installed them. Took road test, "AMAZIN"!! Would say 99.99% of rear vibe, sway all gone.
Have slight movement in "Steering Wheel" yet. It shimmies, rolls from 11:00 to 1:00 on the dial and back. Might be Tie rod bushings,AYE???? Gonna have Balnce checked again, and go from there.
Once again thanks to the "CLUB"! All kinds of peeps think I am really gaining knowlege. :beerchug:

glad to hear you got the rearend fixed.

the steering wheel turning would more than likely be tie rod ends. fixing them will help with some of your shimmy, probably not all. 11-1 movement sounds like quite a bit to me. should be really noticable to your mechanic. make sure you get them fixed. saw a couple cars break them and turned out to be a very bad deal on one and really lucky, only going 15 mph, on the other.

good luck

Re: Rear end Sway Frnt end shimmy

Post by Lobos02Poncho »

Back to 11:00 TO 1:00,
I used those hrs. to give u the idea as to the direction my steering wheel was shimmying. (shimmying????)
Finally will be checking front wheel balancing today, and while that's being done look at control arm bushing and front end.
Will keep y'al posted

Happy to report after RE- balancing front tires and rear tires, the "OLEBONNEVILLE" is running like a champ. I'm kinda afraid to say that as something else might happen.
Balancing took 99.999% of the shimmy away. Also put new rotors and pads on today.
KarKar good except for rust by gas tank. That's my next project.

Also found Rainx lens kit really cleans up yellowed headlight lenses, the process is a 3-4 step process, but it works.
