Cleared Head Lights

Post by locowbl »

I cleared my tail lights this week end. I really like the way it looks especially with the silver body color on the car. I was looking at it and looking at the front of the car and thought now all I need to do is clear the front. Has any one cleared the head lights?

I knew that all I had to do was ask the question and there’d be someone there with the solution.

I know it says Silverstar 3057 but depending on your state requirements Silverstar 3057A is amber.

The silverstar headlights don't last, their blinker bulbs have been fine in my SSEi for 2+ years. The 3057A is like hen's teeth to find. They do make white bulbs that are frosted but illuminate white.

Here in Pa using those white would be a no no. They require amber. &^%$#@

Like Ed said, the blinker bulbs are fine. I have had them ib the truck and car for quite a few years and have never replaced one.

I wonder if you could nite shade a regular bulb or if it would burn off..

I haven’t really looked for the Silver Star’s yet, but I’ve found the Sylvania 3057A’s at the local part house. Is there a big difference between the two? :dontknow:

Yes. The regular 3057A is a plain amber colored bulb, that you can see. The Silverstar is blue-ish when off but flashes amber.

You need to blink amber, for safety and visibility. However, there's no law that says the bulb always has to look amber, lol.

There is a law that says the reflector needs to be there somewhere. By taking the amber insert out, you're also removing the reflector. And no, the silver reflectors for the headlights don't count.

Take a look at this Honda CRV Headlamp:

Image

There's a reason that all OEM cars, even with clear markers have some kind of orange or reflective insert within them.

I cleared mine knowing that cops are looking for better things than reflectors missing on a full sized sedan. But then there are no safety or emissions tests in rural Illinois!

You did say it, but reflective inserts don't have to be orange. They also do throw light better than just bulbs in "chromed" housings like when 00+ gut their lights of the orange.

I was never too happy with the DIY cleared corners on my 1993.

I don't see how those guy's that I see at those Quicker Sticker places would pick up on the clear with no reflective insert. It seams like I've seen a few of the newer vehicles that don't have anything but amber bulbs.

They have the reflector behind it designed to scatter light more. Compare the 92-95 lights to the 96-99 lights. The 92-99 have the extra "diffusing" section on the front lens, while the 96+ have a clear lens.
