alternative FWI

Post by Adamus Prime »

I'm lookin for a new intake system, I've looked at the INTENSE FWI... :bluetwitch:

$180 ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

I'm going to the drawing board on this one... I'm gonna make one...

Inspiration.

I'm open to suggestions, but I'm looking for a nice "power chamber" effect...

That chamber does nothing but cause harmonics really. Definately does nothing for performance.

Here's what I did:

Image

That's 3" aluminum 90* bend coupled to a 45* silicone elbow, to 3" aluminum straight (very short, and that's how I have the Vortec air filter checker thingy mounted), to an INTENSE TB coupler. Deleted the factory evap canister and put a small motorcycle canister in its place (the black box thingy) and ran the tube down that, to a bigass K&N.

Temps stay at ambient while moving (gonna insulate the whole thing later), noise is much different than any other FWI setup I've tried, and I will NEVER outflow it.

EDIT: Total cost to build, minus the filter, was close to 70 bucks, if that. I had many of the parts already, and actually overspent as I ended up with tubing I didn't even need (3" 45* elbow)

2005 GXP - White Gold Pearl, no mods...yet.
2000 SSEi - Resurrection in progress. Built L67 w/L32 fuel rail, ported heads, and cam. Camaro front brake system, GXP cluster, and much more in planning.

That ARC thing is junk in too many ways. Some already stated.

Unless you insulate the aluminum intake tubing or what ever you make, all you're making is a LOUD heat sink. #-o

There are cheaper alternatives INTENSE's FWI. You could probably build your own for around $100 or less with similar components. But it's really the simplest and best way to go about an air intake.

Time is of the essence to me, INTENSE does all the leg work for you and puts it into one package. Time = money IMO

I hate how people complain about the $180 intense charges. If K&N made a FIPK for the Bonne, it would be over $300 and not be any better than what Intense sells. The FIPK for the Grand Prix is like $325 and a total ripoff. I understand $180 seems like a lot of money, but if you put it in an actual perspective, and figure out the actual dollars/HP, it's one of the best/cheapest mods ever. I figure it gives somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20 HP, so that's a little under/over $10/HP.

OP, no offense, but it's not really that expensive once you consider all the factors and the perspective of the rest of the Cold Air Intake market.

Ok, well even if the Intense FWI only makes 10, any thing else could not make any more HP than that, and wouldn't be cheaper off-the-shelf.

the ARC intakes ARE well insulated... I own one...

I'm gonna just run a couple of nice mandrel's down to the foglight...

gut the foglight housing, hole saw the exterior lens, reassemble...

figure out what to do with the other foglight later...

There's a couple different directions this might go:

1. a) You actually listen to our years and years and years of experience with aftermarket and modified intakes for this platform (which we've been doing as a focus group for over 10 years), which includes proven results, research and personal experience of hundreds of members, or b) you can ditch that and just do what you want in spite of our opinions, which you are very likely to hear the more you post alternative intakes.

2. Keep posting alternative intakes until you actually find one that will match or out-perform the one and only intake specifically designed for our platform, with the proof to back it up.

Pick one.

Just curious, is the FWI air filter in the wheel well in a positive, negative or neutral pressure location? Thanks, - BC

If I had to guess based on filter location, I'd say:

92-99 is a POSITIVE to NEUTRAL.

00-05 is probably Neutral.
(simply based on the more protected/shielded location)

There's no way either of them is negative, as there are no natural outlets that anything draws from in that location. The difference between positive, negative, and neutral would be so small in this area, that it wouldn't be a factor. Remember, Ram-Air is a proven MYTH below 125mph. The main purpose of the FWI isn't in terms of ambient pressure, it's designed to take advantage of true ambient air temperatures, and not draw from the hotter engine bay.
