Sputtering problems
I'm having a weird and I mean a weird problem lol. This problem just started almost 3 weeks ago with the car and only does it when it's between a half and a quarter of a tank of fuel it starts to sputter really bad and acts like it wants to cut off.The check engine light also comes on when this happens. When the car is filled up with fuel it does just fine and check engine light goes off. Anybody know what might be the problem?

Re: Sputtering problems
My first guess would be the fuel filter and then the fuel pump may be weak.Aaron88 wrote:I'm having a weird and I mean a weird problem lol. Re: Sputtering problems
I don't think it's the fuel pump. The fuel pump was replaced a few ago when my grandfather owned it. I will be sure to check the filter.

Re: Sputtering problems
Guess what guys? I went to move the Bonneville just 2 mins ago back in the driveway and at almost a full tank she was doing the sputtering. I cut the car off and fired it back up again. It ran for a min back fired then cut off again. I fire it back up again and this time with my foot on the throttle and it blows some kind of crap out the exhaust pipe. After that it did fine so Idk. I still need to check the fuel filter. Oh and yea no check engine light came on this time.

Re: Sputtering problems
Yes I do have a code reader. Where is the plug you hook it into located at on the car?

Re: Sputtering problems
Look under the area of the steering column....
But is the code reader capable of reading the 94-95 GM Cars? These 2 years have a funky computer... And some tools will not read it... Also even tho the car has an OBD2 connector, it uses OBD1 protocol...
I almost think you may get a Code P0361 or a P1361 Depending on the Code Reader used

Re: Sputtering problems
Ny '95 did things exactly like that. The stuff coming out of the back was internals from my Cat converter (cat clogging up th eexhaust). You may be able to test this. Place a larger piece of cardboard or something right behind the exhast tips, and give it a few revs for a bit (not redlining, just maybe 2k or so). If it is the cat, you may, but not always, get some honeycomb shaped debis flying out the tail pipes. Might be worht a try to, since it is free and easy to do.Aaron88 wrote: I cut the car off and fired it back up again. It ran for a min back fired then cut off again. Re: Sputtering problems
Another test is to kick or pound on the cat under the car. If it rattles, its junk.

Re: Sputtering problems
I do hear some type of rattle on my exhaust system everytime I start it and when it idles. So that's probably the cat right?

Re: Sputtering problems
I'd still get underneath and bang on the cat directly, or do the trick I mentioned above. Loose heat shields and stuff can sound the same, but not actually be anything to worry about mechanically.

Ditto on the cat. Had something very similar happen on my wife's `01 Grand Prix GT. It was the cat.
Let the cat out!

Re: Sputtering problems
I think the car is gonna be needing a new exhaust system soon anyway. That one is still original and is now starting to rust bad.

Re: Sputtering problems
I checked out the cat. The cat appears to be fine and not clogged. The rattle I'm hearing is a loose heat shield.

Re: Sputtering problems
Your car doesn not need a new exhaust system. They are stainless steel from the factory. What you are seeing is surface rust.
