radio controls on wheel not working

Post by e.scott.k »

Hello to all,

Newbie here...thanks in advance for info.

The radio controls on my 95 bonnie do not work the radio at all. Where should I start with this? The radio works fine...just not from the wheel.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi, I had this happen on my 92 GTP and it was the wires in the steering column. I guess with all the turning of the steering wheel the wires get messed up. I even could see little puffs of smoke coming from the column. This could be the problem. I didnt get it fixed because it was too much of a hassle and the car was over 330K.

Try turning the wheel at different points and see if you get anything. Do the buttons lights work or are they dark?

There is a fuse at the base of the steering column. It is either that or the SIR coil (clockspring) is bad.

Just had this exact issue on my 1995. Turns out the insides of the switches were melted. This write up explains exactly how to do the job. Took me a couple of hours and now they work perfectly.

kipwrite--did you use the toothpick method or the JB weld? I am guessing the toothpicks, as you say it only took a couple of hours.

I had a 93 GTP I bought with 127,000 and it was the plate in the steering colomn that was all warped (the contacts ride on the plate as the steering wheel turns) Changed the plate and I had steering wheel controls again. The Bonneville may not be the same issue.
