MATILDA (for those that haven't met her yet)

Post by willwren »

Built her about 10 years ago. Entirely left-handed due to a recent surgery on the right hand (one of many).

She had a little ASS-ident while on vacation with a friend awhile ago. Deemed totalled, but we put 'er back together (about half the total settlement went into the Zilla).

Anyway, here she is working yesterday:

Today I solved a couple problems. A couple or three years ago, my ex-GF left the tailgate (it was a thing of beauty, expanded steel on a lightweight frame) unlatched and she lost it on the freeway. Since it's been gone, the rear clearance light has been exposed and taking a beating. I welded up a 'shield' for that light today, and fixed a cracked weld from the ASS-ident up front also:

You can see where the impact was. It hit so hard, my spare tire hit my friend's spare on the back of his jeep, saving his kids in the back seat as the entire back end caved in. The front of the trailer was BRUTALIZED. I cut it all away and replaced much of the steel with wood instead:

Image

They paid out $900 to total it, and only $200 went back into it. Much of the remaining money went into a new computer for my friends (they babysit Bo 5 days a week while I'm working) and the rest into the Zilla.

Some specs:

Light enough for two men to lift (tubular steel frame)
3500 pound springs, and when they hit the stops, the torsion axle takes it up to 4500 lbs.
5x8 foot bed with 32" side rails
Plenty of tie-downs
Custom rear landing gear (quick-release pins) for a 5-point stability system when loading/unloading (they allow the tounge to be jacked up enough to change the tires without a seperate jack)

She's served me and my friends well, and probably will for a good 10 years more.

After WCBF, we'll be fabricating a replacement tailgate again. I'm building a temporary out of 2x6 this weekend.

Truck hit it from behind, destroying the second (wood) tailgate, lifting the back of the trailer up until the spare tire hit the one on the jeep towing it.

I actually still have pics around of this thing being built.

Not only that, but it's been in standby for years to haul jacks and slicks (and ice) to the track, but CaddyMatt always comes through with our honorary Ford truck.

Here's some assembly pics:

And the original tailgate (before the wood was installed on the siderails):

That's my old 98 Z71 (new then) so you can see why the trailer is blue. ;)

Just finished installing the replacement clearance light in the new 'housing' and re-wired the main harness while I was at it. It took some damage during the ass-ident also:

Time to paint it to match the SLEeper and put some silver crosslace rims on it. You know it would look sweet

Did a bit of work today. Some touch-up painting, and began building a new (temporary, one-year) tailgate out of wood. New steel tailgate is on the horizon like the last one though. MAYBE this winter.

I'll get some pics up tomorrow of the new tailgate. It pivots and latches just like the original, although I did have to make some changes to some of the steel on the back of the trailer to allow for 2x4 and 2x6 construction as opposed to the 1" thick steel tubing I had before.

I don't tow it alot with the SLE (hitch used to be on the Zilla, but my trans warranty prohibits it considering the performance build that was put into it).

Tailgate done for now, other than letting it dry out a bit and then sealing it. Should do for the next year or so. Pivoting on 1" diameter oak dowels pressed (and glued/screwed) 4" deep into the bottom 2x4:

This works basically like the original (pictured above) did.

But easily half the weight, and a fraction of the cost (I had the wood already, notice I had to splice two of the 2x6 pieces together in the center to have enough).

I have a blue Jeep to pull it with any time I need it. Or I can use the SLEeper, since it has a hitch.
