My mechanic and I cannot figure out the newest problem with my car. Occasionally, it doesn't start. There is no pattern to it, doesn't matter whether it's hot or cold. I'll turn the key-- there will be NO clicking sound --and nothing happens. However, if I wait and try again in about ten minutes, it'll start fine. Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone know what might be going on?

Sounds like a poor connection or bad battery cable. Have you checked the connections?

The ignition switch could be bad or simply need adjustment. Is there power to the accessories before and after cycling to start?

This could be the Key, the tumbler/ Passkey wires... Right down to the battery cable or the Park Neutral switch... Hard to say for certain...

yeah the resisters in our keys suck and wear out after 20 years

I have the same problem from time to time every 6 years or so. I replace the starter and no more trouble for another 5 or 6 years. I suggest that you inspect and check your connections and battery before investing in a new starter. If the battery cables are original, they might need replacing also, but don't just replace them without giving them a good going over. They are expensive as I have replaced them too. Also, get one new ignition key made too before changing the starter. I paid $8.50 for a new GM key at my local locksmith.

There is a remote chance the contacts in the ignition switch are "worn". It runs around $50 depending on where you get it. You'll have to drop the steering column to install it.

The fact that you're having to wait a few minutes between a failed start and a successful one leads me to believe it's the PASSkey system. The problem could be the resistor on your key. If so, the easy fix is to have another key made. Conversely, it could be in the ignition switch. If so, you're looking at replacing switch, the PASSkey processor (not sure of the exact name, but it's the device that reads the resistance on the key and either allows the car to start or disables it) and new ignition keys. I had to go this route with a '94 Olds LSS I used to own and it cost me over $300 at a dealership. The problem just got worse and worse until the car wouldn't start at all.
