You know what they say, the two best days in a man's life are the day he buys his boat and the day he sells it...

Congrats,

Hopefully the engine damage will be in the intake and not extend to the cylinders.

Suggestion.. find a smaller trailer and sell the double-axle Shorelander. The weight of the boat is probably under 3500lbs, so a single axle with a folding tongue will be really easy to park and store inside the garage.

As an aside, you do realize you will need to pull the drive and the engine in order to convert to a thru-hull exhaust? (to remove the exhaust bull-horn and cap the flange on the transom). If the motor has to be overhauled, it's no big deal since the motor is coming out.

howdy Curt-

yes i know about the exhaust, i planned for the worst and worked the conversion into the budget, if the engine doesn't need to come out, then ill skip the thru hull

forgot about an update.

last summer our engine repairs appeared to fix it after a new pickup coil in the distributor. After that the first day on the lake i didn't hook up alternator charge back and killed the boat! the second day the engine blew hahaha. also hit a rock and screwed up the propellor. either way it was winter repair time!

pictures to do the talking. new 350 (4 bolt main, 700 miles!), redone interior (marine PW floors, sundeck, bench seating, captains chair), new prop (15P), water pump, impeller, comp cam, edelbrock intake, holley 650 double pumper. DIY Thru Hull Exhuast (y pipe capped)

That's a unique way to do the interior, bit of over-kill in terms of structure, but you'll probably have to replace it again in a few years unless you sealed that lumber and plywood with epoxy or multiple coats of varnish. Looking at the mess around the belly tank brings out not-so-fond memories of mine :)

On the two open exhausts through the transom... find a pair of rubber flappers for those ports and, if you can, add taller risers to the manifolds. You really do need a down-hill slope to the exhaust. If you chop the throttle while running on plane you'll notice the wake can catch up to you and slap the transom with a lot of water. The flaps and slope in the exhausts will keep the water from flooding the engine through the exhaust. The engine's back-pressure will keep water flowing out most of the time, but you can still blow the engine with one good wave on the stern..enough to flood the cylinders and lock up the motor.

How did the wood you cut out of the transom look when you made the holes for the exhaust? Hopefully is wasn't spongy-wet. Also, did you poke around the keyhole opening around the drive with an awl to see if you had any wood-rot going on in the transom?

all wood was sealer with epoxy (yuck), same with the floors. the exhaust does have a good angle to it but flappers are here just not installed. the wood was good on the transom (something about a 4 winns :)-)
