92 Bonneville Transmission Cooler

Post by syndr0me »

Do our 92 bonnevilles come with a radiator/transmission cooler combo?

And I checked my transmission and I seem to have 3 lines coming out of it with the addition of a aftermarket pump (??) It's very odd...

Thanks

Supercharged ones came with auxilliary coolers typically, with a small heat exchanger in front of the radiator on the passenger side, but no pump. IIRC, they all have a cooler in the radiator itself. Got any pics of your lines and the pump?

It has a small external heat exchanger mounted in front of the Radiator? Or lines that pass through the radiator itself? or both? Ill defenitly get pics tmr. I know the pump is 100% aftermarket, but why? No clue.

Yes I have an SSEi

The stock aux cooler is inline with the standard lines running to the radiator, IIRC. And yes, the aux cooler is sitting in front of the radiator. The fluid leaves the tranny, goes through the radiator and the aux cooler, and then back to the tranny.

Line 14 and 15 I recall clearly along with 11 and 12 because of there distinct n odd twists n turns.. but there is another one.. further along the side of the tranny. but it looks OEM.. unless it was welded in due to the pump as a return line??? ill check it tommorow.

I seriously doubt you have any kind of external pump. You're not correctly identifying a component. Please post a pic of it.

That is not stock. Neither is that thing behind it between the master cylinder and the strut tower.

Exactly. And it looks terrible. I am ripping it out. But like I said, I have 3 lines coming out the tranny. I am confused. ???

If you can't figure out what's going on with the lines, your best bet might be to put a union between the two lines where the pump was.

I'm trying to figure out that line that comes out from under/behind the throttle body and goes down between the pump and the ELC compressor. Does it loop back up to the mystery thing between the MC and strut tower?

OK so lets call that thing between the MC n strut tower the "distro" because it goes from 1 line to 2. Another thing u can't see beside it is a check valve of sorts. I figured the routing.

New Line Tranny -> Pump -> Check Valve -> Distro (2 way split)... --->

->(1) Ext. Cooler -> Rad -> Tranny Original Line

->(2) Tranny Original Line

**This dosent necessarily show flow path***

Upon further inspection, the new line come out from the SIDE of the transmmision OIL PAN. I can't seem to find any info on it so I guess it is a new line that has been tapped in.

So what is your guys opinion?

Is it trying to make extra flow through the cooler/radiator?

Anyhow. I ripped the whole system out. The original lines now flow through the cooler/rad like they should. Pump, Distro and Check valve are out. The 3rd line that comes out of the trans oil pan has been capped off.

I now have access to my brake line from my master cylinder to the ABS... what a detour.. lol

I know exactly what thats for, because we install them at work.
Its so the car can be flat towed behind a motorhome.
The trailer wiring from the motor home, when a switch is turned on in the motor home, kicks that pump on to circulate the transmission oil when the engine is not running. Its probably made by REMCO.
The motorhome would then be fitted with a motoring system, that would tell you if the oil pump stopped working, thusly, hurting the transmission.

If that pump still works, you could get some good money for it on Craigslist. looks like a Remco LP1 lube pump. They sell for about 800 CAD new.

Makes complete sense! When I bought the car, the old folks that sold it to me told me they would go to Florida every year in there huge motor home! And the car is equip with a rear hitch.

Thanks man!
