Sooooooo, I might want to Turbo my Bonneville..

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

Sooooooo, I might want to Turbo my Bonneville..

Post by comatoast »

What do you guys think? Good idea or bad? Ive dumped about $600 in mods for the supercharger, so that would be a hit, but are there any pros/cons? The ZZP Z3 kit seems to be pretty basic and easy to install, and for about $3K with the kit, injectors, etc would it be worth it? Or would it tear the tranny up pretty quick

Would if I blew it up. No point in fixing what ain't broken ;)

Turbo seems to be the cheapest way to get to 300 hp. Unless I'm missing something

It doesn't matter if you build up what you have or put a turbo on it. The transmission will not last long.

Do you plan on this being a DD?

:withstupid:

The fact of the matter is that it will break. And when it does, your car will be sitting in the driveway with a nice turbo setup and no way to get the power to the ground.

I agree with the others. Every one of us loves horsepower, but if you're going to sink 3 grand into a turbo make sure you have another 3 sitting around to do the trans a couple of weeks after that, these things hate torque. Its true you can get a used trans a lot cheaper, but you're only going to blow that to pieces as well, so build yours really tough.

Haven't we been over this once already Matt?

I'm not saying you can't do it, or that you shouldn't do it. However, it's a lot of work, probably with some custom fab, and with what I know you do for a job, it definitely won't add to your longevity. I know member turbo ssei blew his bottom end one day on his way to work, and he had $5,000 into a ZZP shortblock along with his turbo and everything else. Stay S/C and make your goals more reasonable. It's a 10 year old car, and you do tons of driving with it. Make it last much longer.

Wouldn't a turbo that makes less lower end torque be better for trans longevity? Though, just to get to 300 hp, you wouldn't have to do much to the L67 you already have.

Rockers+headers+fwi+65# injectors+2.8"+e85~300whp or close enough to fool the guy you blew by and your trans.

Thanks guys it was just something I thought of because it seems like turbos are quite a bit cheaper to add hp rather than building the crap out of the motor to drop to a 2.8-3.0 pulley. Either way the trans/ torque converter will need a big upgrade.

Ed. I think your right actually. I forgot I had this idea last year too. Oops :)

It is a daily driver. Kind of. I only drive the Bonneville on nice days that I don't work. So maybe 1-2 says a week. It does have 170k miles and I guess I'm just at a point where I don't know if I wanna build this or just buy something else to build. There was a ws6 for sale locally with 100k on it for $10,000 and looked mint and got to thinking. I'd have to put another 2k into the motor and another 2k + into the trans to even be close to the ws6 stock.

Ugh. Is it possible to have a mid life crisis at 32 :(

I agree with the guys... You better be ready to sink some serious $$$$ into a built trans...

On my Van I rebuilt the trans with all of the hard parts I wanted so that it could handle the abuse... The van is 3800 Lbs without me in it... My shifts were 6100 with a 3.33 ratio... I beat the ever loving hell out of it for 25,000 miles... The funny part is the Torque converter is what actually failed.. But if I was to use the trans I would need to yank the valve body and see what if any trans was pushed through it... If I have to go through all of that it will be rebuilt again...

I was doing burnouts( yes in a Pontiac Trans Sport )...Had all the Tq Management shut off... I smoked em from a dig, spun to 6100 and BANG Shift.... Ran to the top of second hit the 3rd shift and heard " SCREEEEeeEEEeEEEeeCH " Thats the point where the torque converter got unhappy....

I R&R's that trans myself... parts for the inside of the trans, including the rebuild kit with Borg Warner clutches ran a shade over $600.... Only to have the Torque converter fail...lol

End story is you have to be ready to pay to play...lol

I remember last fall a guy here ( or maybe it was just a link ) had a fully rebuilt and upgraded hd tranny for this car with zero miles on it and would have installed it for 1500 or so? Man I wish I would have jumped on that :(

If I could get a good 300 crank hp with zero kr, I would be happy. Anything other than that you start diving into transmissions, cams injectors new top end headers etcetc and it starts to get out of control. So basically a 3.2-3.3 pulley with some supporting mods. But from what I've seen and heard alot of people aren't impressed with rockers, springs and headers. So that's why I'm still debating what to do. I'm just hoping the body holds together long enough for me to finish the motor :)

You are still gonna need to do those things with a turbo....and i believe you will have to change a cam any ways when you go turbo

According to zzp. Stock cam and rockers are fine. Might want to upgrade springs. But nit necessary I believe
