Is putting a chip on my front wheel drive bonne gxp worth it

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

Is putting a chip on my front wheel drive bonne gxp worth it

Post by bigrod64 »

Is it reasonable to put a chip on a front wheel drive car, let alone the northstar v-8? i think i found one that does'nt mess with my warrenty.

A "chip"? Can you be more specific?

To my knowledge there is NOBODY that has a tune available for the LD8 Northstar in a Bonneville GXP. One shop in Alberta was close, but couldn't follow through because of the unavailability of a guinea pig car for the dyno. I have a gut feeling that you're looking at some sort of electronic apparatus that will make your wallet lighter and offer absolutely no performance improvement - in fact you could even be HURTING performance.

I didn't buy my car to mod the engine, so I'm cool with stock Northstar power levels (4000+ rpm  ) and the lack of aftermarket support.

There are no "chips" in these cars, you just re-flash the PCM. However, the only company that offers support of the LD8 that I know of is HP Tuners, and I don't know anyone who's actually done it. You have to manually adjust and alter programming w/ HPT. There are no "canned" tunes that I know of, meaning a tune you just flash into your PCM sold by someone else.

Those little boxes they sell on e-bay? Those are resistors that trick your PCM into thinking it's -22F outside, adding more fuel for more power. Not only does the PCM figure this out quickly, but they also can cause engine damage.

This is true. One thing I like about GP guys is they take a little more performance risks then we do on here.

The median age of guys on ClubGP is probably 21. The median age on here is probably closer to 30. Most of the members here are older and wiser, and understand the costs and risks of taking their only car off the road for a month. That's the thing I like about here, we advocate for safe and effective modifications and plenty of redundancy.
