thanks, ive seen that post. ive actually already got in contact with randman couple weeks ago about the build. that kind of job is beyond my skills. im going to ask him if he would be willing to make me one if i sent him the trim.

it could be possible but i think like john deere said the deck needs to think its playing a tape and having the motors moving could be part of that equation. i think if the motor isnt moving the deck might think there is an error and not work as expected.
Is this this what you're trying to do? I just added this scosche FM modulator which provides an Aux. jack to plug in an mp3 player etc. All the details you might require.

yes, i knew about the fm modulators. there was a reason i didnt want to go that route. im not sure exactly what it is right now. i think its because i thought a straight wire-in into the radio would yield better sound than going through fm connector. either way, i read your posts and you said you figured out how to undo theft lock for radios. i was planning on going to a junk yard and picking up a cd unit. i dont know if they will be locked or unlocked but do you think you can share the information with me in case the one i pick up happens to be locked? im assuming the dealers charge out the ass for this procedures. you can PM me if you'd prefer. thanks.
John Deere Boy wrote:'92 and '93 radios don't have theftlock.
i guess that explains why my radio has not locked when i remove power. i sure was glad about that though because i didnt know about the theft lock until after i had already disconnected it. but that little fact will be useful when im looking for a new deck.
I would see if you could find one of these. Sorry, on my phone so you will have to copy and paste. I just hooked one up in my truck, works great. http://www.jcwhitney.com/isimple-soundb ... oiSi861351# I can control everything from my head unit. My truck is an 04 avalanche. The link I posted is for a 98 bonneville but maybe they have them for older ones too. The one I bought had a 3.5mm cable too but this one has RCA jacks so you could just get a RCA cord that converts to a 3.5mm.

Looks like a winner, a bit pricier than an FM modulator but they fuss all of the wiring details to make it appear more plug and play (you know, after ripping the dash apart etc.) Does this disable the CD player in the HU? I'd also guess the sound quality could be much better than fm modulation although I'm still not sure why a unit that transmits an fm signal direct into the antennae doesn't sound better than mine does. Scosche sent me new antennae adaptors which they think will help. When the weather gets nicer and my life isn't crazy (yeah, sure) I'll probably try to get back in and see if that is really causing an issue. I doubt it but we'll see. Be cool if I could fwd songs using the steering wheel controls instead of unlocking the pod to advance the shuffle (no doubt!)

That unit requires a radio with a CD changer option, which 92-93 don't have. Did CD changers start in 1994?
There is no aftermarket device that will connect an ipod to a 92-93 radio that does not use an FM modulator. And there is no way for the 92-93 headunit and steering wheel buttons to control the ipod. The steering wheel buttons might be able to control an ipod if you upgrade to a 94+ headunit with the CD changer option, but the problem with that is if you have climate control, the illumination in the climate control display is actually powered by the 92+93 radio headunits. So if you change out the radio, you have to upgrade the climate control to a 1994 unit. sucks, huh?

Your right, the furthest year back I could find that was available was for 95.

The one I installed in my truck retained all factory features. It just hijacks the XM signal and adds in a "iPod" channel. If I want to use XM I just switch to it. I don't subscribe to it though so it really doesn't matter to me. The website for them is http://www.isimplesolutions.com they have some other solutions but I didn't really look into it much further.
with those other options, at those prices, i might as well say *fook* it and get an aftermarket unit. compromising on looks but more practical than an adapter.regardless, thanks for all your inputs. i think a stock cd deck will be the final solution. it would be nice to know exactly how the guy on eBay is modifying his though.

Watch out for CD players that came out of Grand Am's...they look and work like 92-93 Bonneville radios, but your steering wheel buttons will perform different functions. I found out the hard way...mine came out of a '95 Grand Am and i've had to learn to live with this:
