Let me see your wheels 00+

Post by lou »

I realy want swoopies but since I can`t find a set for the right price, I`m thinking of an alternative. What other factory wheels would fit? Show me some ideas, factory and aftermarket.

RTX Zen in 17" x 7. They're actually my winter wheels and I didn't choose the style - I just needed something that would clear the GXP brakes and this is all that my local guy had. I don't mind the look:

we did this a while ago, http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... our+wheels not just for 2000+

just about any front wheel drive GM full/mid size car will fit, as long as they have a 5 x 115mm bolt pattern.

I don't think there are many chrome 20 spokes as in my signature. They look decent in the argent silver as well though. Better than the NP7 (argent 5 spoke) rims it came with.

I know I may take a little flak here, but...

You can expand your wheel search by adding 5x114.3 or 5x4.5 bolt patterns. Just make sure you stick with a 38-45mm offset, and no wider than 8.5 inch. Keep in mind the difference between 114.3 and 115 is less than a millimeter, and the cone shank on your lug nut is more than 3 times wider than that.

Some will say that you will shear lug studs off or that you will have rampant vibration problems. I can tell you from personal experience that is false. As long as the hub and center bore of the wheel are compatible (usually 73mm in most aftermarket wheels) the wheels will work just fine. In the pic below is a set of Mustang Bullitt wheels (5x4.5) I ran on my Grand Prix (also 5x115) for over three years with no issues at all. I even drove the car to Texas and back and hot lapped Texas Motor Speedway reaching speeds of 115mph and the car was dead smooth. The only reason I took the wheels off was to go back to a smaller wheel for more tire sidewall and a better ride.
The second pic is the new wheels I installed (also 5x4.5) and those wheels are still on the car today with no issues at all.

I will finish by saying that if you can get wheels in style you like, in the proper bolt pattern, then that would be the best choice, but the other patterns are an option if you choose to go that route.

The main thing most people who run 5x114.3 wheels recommend is running a hub-centric ring, so that way the wheel is centered on the studs.

Im really considering powdercoating my bent spoke 5 spokes. I wouldnt mind a set of 20spokes to do that to though. Ive been looking at cheap wheel options for a while myself.

Since I powder coat for a living, that was my first choice was to do mine but the chrome is too nice on it. Also, my Bonnie is a gold color colored rims wouldn`t look good imo.

I see where youre coming from, its not like I love chrome but blasting them would be painful. If I do it Im leaning towards a metallic charcoal, since black might look a little like a set of spares or something.

Centered on the HUB. The hub of the wheel is where the wheel should mate and carry loads. Lugs can very well snap if there are sticky tires and nothing holding the wheel there but lug nuts.

:-# :banghead:

Thanks Jason. Not sure where my brain was on that one. The spacer is so that the whole hub and everything it's attached to supports the weight and force, not just the studs.

The hubs on my Imperial were too big for todays wheel to fit over. I had spacers so the wheels rode on the studs, pretty scaring but it held up. I drove it for a weekend without the spacers, the wheels look like they were falling off but yet the car drove very smooth.
Back the the topic, I was checking out Impala wheels but those are 16". Lately I`ve been checking out and thinking about using 18". I wish I had the money for some GXP wheels.

Not entirely possible when the hub bore diameter is the same on the wheels you're installing. My 17x8 2005+ Mustang GT wheels I had on the SSEi were also 70.3mm. What kind of a ring are you going to fit in there?

The key is similar hub bore diameters, or these rings if applicable, AND your typical star torquing pattern. I actually did mine in three passes, 30-60-90 lb-ft.
