00+ Owners w/ HUD (SSEi and GXP), read this!

Post by 00Beast »

So I'm finally getting around to getting my non-HUD windshield replaced in my SSEi, so I called my local body shop, he says sure, no problem, bring it in Friday. I was running errands and my mom called, saying that the body guy called, saying that the windshield is on national backorder and he won't have one till April, that the HUD windshields are getting scarce and no one is making them, the next windshield I'll get on the car in a few years will probably end up being a standard windshield again.

I love this car, but having a car w/ such non-mainstream parts just pisses me off sometimes, especially since the last Bonneville rolled off the line just under 6 years ago, and the brand they were sold under is now gone. UGH.

So has anyone else had this issue lately?

I gotta call BS on that. You need to find a larger company to do the work.

Call Safelite in St. Cloud, I guarantee that have one in stock, and can probably smash the local guys prices. That HUD windshield I had put in the black SSEi a few weeks ago was $479 installed.

From their supplier. ;)

GM exported 326 GXP to Canada over 2004/2005. I'm lucky in that it essentially is a parts bin car, what isn't shared with regular H-bodies is shared with Cadillac. Body and interior, on the other hand... will be another story.

Yeah, idk. At this point he's already made the claim w/ my insurance, so it's not worth trying to go anywhere else.

Tell your insurance they aren't giving you what you are supposed to get. Maybe they are billing your insurance for the hud and giving you something cheaper.

I will be inspecting the windshield before it goes in. If it doesn't say HUD, it's not going in. This guy is pretty reputable. His son has a couple newer Riv's, so he understands I'm sure.

Uh oh. I need one of those. I'm not putting in one of the regular windows - no way. The last body shop put in the wrong one and I couldn't stand it and had them replace it again.

Andrew, $479 installed?? That's amazing. We get so screwed up here on these kind of things.

Waaa, get a rare/unique/limited production run car from Australia, THEN complain! :)

I've never had issue with HUD specific windshields from the company I use.

Got a qoute for 400 installed after tax for the HUD model
250 installed after tax for the non hud model

Could tint it yourself
It wouldnt look as good....

Theres a HUD for non HUD cars that just came out that mounts to your dash.
It simply comes with a little pice of stick on tint

I call shenanigans. By US law parts for cars HAVE to be made for at least 10 years AFTER the final year model rolls off the line. My car is an 02, that means if it stopped in 02 parts still had to be made up until NEXT year.

If you don't have a HUD, don't worry about it. If the car in your profile is what you're talking about, I'm not aware of any SE's being equipped with Head-up Display.

You should talk to your insurance carriers. I have a windshield add on that only costs about 9 bucks every 6 months and it covers my windshield replacement 100%. State Farm btw, before you need to ask. ;)

That's how I got my replacement for the ZiLLA. Glass deductible was 100 bucks, but the shop waived it. HUD glass is spendy.

That's my plan. Proof of improper installation was strong last weekend, we jumped in to go somewhere and I had to spend 10 minutes cleaning off the INSIDE of the glass, as it had snowed then melted on it, allowing moisture to somehow seep in the seal and freeze on the inside of the windshield. That was not fun.

A windshield? Call a good glass place, tons of them around. They'll be able to get it, it's just that HUD windshields are becoming more scarce apparently.
