My take on the Intense FWI kit for a 99 se

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

My take on the Intense FWI kit for a 99 se

Post by Bing »

These are the steps I took in creating a cleaner set up for my FWI kit and a solid filter mount.
1. Removed and filled in the IAT location on the silicone coupler with some hi temp RTV silicone.Image
2. Cut out an 8" circle in some aluminum to cover the charcoal canister hole. Then I drilled a 2.5" hole closest to the fender. Cutting slots to the outside diameter of the filter with a saw, and then bending the tabs up. ImageThis is how I made the tabs that would clamp around the filter and support it at the same time.
Also started to untape the wire loom to relocate the IAT and the EVAP air solenoid wires. They are long enough to reroute, if you are crazy enough to do this step (at least in my 99).Image
3. Relocated IAT in aluminum coupler with a new PCV grommet for an old honda. Pop riveted the aluminum filter support to the inner fender well where the canister hole is. Sprayed everything with some truck bed coating to help protect it from rusting/corroding from nasty road salt. Mounted the PCM tray to the radiator support. I also relocated the drivers side horn underneath the drivers side headlight. Having untaped the loom let me clean up some of the wiring mess that was there before.Image
4. Took the cup that held the EVAP canister and cut off a couple inches from the top. Ran a couple screws through the bottom with spacers, and also used one of the bolts for the ABS support bracket (hence the spacers). I cut the bracket down for the EVAP air solenoid and pop riveted it to the side of the EVAP cup.Image
5. Bought some new hose for the EVAP canister and connected it. I straightened out some of the steel line that comes from the purge solenoid on the valve cover and rebent it using a tubing bender. This let me get the line a lot closer and let me use less rubber. Cut a few inches off the Intense tubing and installed in place. I did buy one more good clamp to replace the one from K&N for the install. Wanting a finished look for the PCM, I decided to cover the top of it for looks. So I cut the top cover down and used some velcro to attach it.Image
6. Some finished views.Image
7. Looking up from the bottom, and no the filter is not rubbing up against anything under here.Image
8. Engine bay shot and dirty bumper.Image
9. It is true that a gutted out air box won't even compare to one of these kits. I am a believer in this kit now, especially with how it woke up my N/A 3800. I know that all the extra work that I did is not required, but I just wanted it to look like the factory might just have offered it this way.

Very similar to what I did on my 93 SSEi.

Nice work!! My 03 made it easy, as it is the car the FWI was originally designed for, lol.

Thats some nice engineering there, I hope that I could learn from this and spruce my car up a bit.
1995 Jeep Cherokee Country- 200,XXX miles and running strong. 4.0L paired with a 5 speed manual. 4.5" long arm lift with 32" tires and regeared to make up for power. Best of all, shes a fire engine red!

2000 Bonneville SSEi- 145,XXX miles, bonestock for the time (don't hold your breath, it might be a long while)

Typos courtesy of LG Optimus G- yes, I do most of my trolling with my phone. Don't judge me.

QS, they have a much harder job than we do. We just have to re-position the PCM, they have to move the Evap canister, etc. Ours is almost a direct-fit. The 00+ was used when they designed the FWI. Just so ya know.

Not bashing his work at all, as it's great, and it's obvious that he put a lot of time into it. Just saying we don't need to go through the trouble.

Thanks guys for your input on my work. I know that my solution is limited to the older bonnevilles but who knows somebody could have an idea for the 2k's. I scrounged around the site before deciding to post my work. There seemed to be a few questions about mounting the FWI kit for the 99 older crowd. I hope that it helps others that might be thinking of doing a 99 or older bonneville. Oh the fun I have now with my L36.

Your solution is very good for the 92-99 vintage. Mine is very similar, but I used toggle clamps to hold mine in the hole. I would imagine someone will either copy or leverage yours.

The 2k installs don't need any solutions or inputs though, the FWI was designed to be nearly plug and play for that platform.

Great Job :thumbleft:

I'm going to be doing something similar to the '93 SSE soon, I have everything, just need another coupler. I think I'll definitely be adapting my install from yours though. Again that looks great, nice work!

When I get back to the states I think I will do this. But the think is will driving long distances in wet weather risky the car of water lock? If that's not the case, what happens if i accidently hit a massive puddle?

What happens if you hit a deer? What happens if your UIM fails and your engine sucks in a bunch of coolant? What if you have a heart-attack tomorrow and never get home?

There a lot of what-if's, but it's not worth not living because of them. I've never had an issue with my FWI in wet weather, and if you see a massive puddle, don't go through it.

Never had an issue yet, and I run it year round. So that's through rain, snow, slushy crap, and everything else in between.

P.S. Next time PLEASE post on YOUR thread and try not to resurrect old ones.
