Exhaust Manifold Gasket??

Post by Corinthone13 »

I have searched through the forums and could not find a definite answer to this question. If there is already a forum on this topic I apologize in advance.

I have a 2003 Bonneville SSEi. We recently noticed a strong exhaust smell in the cabin compartment when the car was idling. When are driving we do not smell it. Just this morning I heard a loud ticking noise coming from the engine when I started it to let it warm up. I have no idea what is causing this symptoms. From what I have read on other forums I wonder if it could be the exhaust manifold gasket. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Most likely the flex joint. The gaskets are a multi layer as and usually are not a problem. Has there been any exhaust work lately?

No. I have never had any exhaust work done on the car.

Check that flex joint between the rear manifold and downpipe. I agree that's your most likely leak.

Thanks for the tip. I will check it out. Would that also account for the ticking noise?

Yes, and it's probably the most likely (but not really common) exhaust leak location. We HAVE seen the Series 2 cast manifolds crack and break though, so get a mirror and a flashlight and inspect well.

For the donut gasket in the flex joint, start with a cold motor. Start it and stick your hand back there feeling for it. Make sure your AC is off so the fans won't run and fool you.

I have the same problem. I just want to confirm that the gasket is a donut and is there a internet source for them? Thank you, Marko :bwoohoo:
