With hot greetings from cold Russia))))

Post by Evgeniy »

Sorry ask me for my lousy English. Good day! The exact time of day. ) My name is Jack. I live in Russia. In the Moscow region. I was happy
lucky enough to buy a cheap (600 $) Pontiac. He stood near the garage but the time I found and began repairing it. The problem in the engine. See previous file owner killed hitting low-set engine oil filters into a pit on the road Moscow - Ryazan  .The service for repairs, he was told $ 4000. So I bought this car.

Well, a few questions on the case.

1. What is the step size of repair crankshaft bearings and connecting rods?
2. Is there somewhere in the electronic repair manual Engine 3.8 L27?

Thank you very much :)

Bearings are sized in thousands of an inch. For a light polish of the crank journals, sizes 0.001", 0.002", and 0.003" are available. For heavier damage repair, 0.010", 0.020", 0.030", and 0.040" oversize bearings are available in addition to the STD size bearings. When you start needing the 0.030" size or bigger, it is time to junk the crank and get a new one. You are well into the surface hardening finish applied to the crank journals, which means your repaired crank might fail even with the correct bearing clearance.

You'll probably have more problems finding a machine shop who's equipment is non metric (or an operator who can convert the dimensions to metric from SAE.) All the bearings and gaskets are available by mail order.

Have you looked into getting a Russian translated manual from the publishers? Even a generic Haynes manual for the H-Body would give the basic assembly of the motor with dimensions and torque specs.

Or simply ask here on the forum for the torque specs and assembly photos. Members of this group have routinely assembled the engines and can provide pictures, specs, and answer most questions that come up.

Thank you! Unfortunately, I haven't found Haynes even in English in Russia. The difference between measurement systems (metric and inches) is a big problem. Gould you please send me a link with specifications and katalog numbers of bearing crankshaft. And one more question: whether there is engine repair manual V6 L27 here on the forum? :) Thank you.

You can search online auto parts places for the parts after you figure out the bearing oversizes you might need. There are several manufacturers who make the bearings.

Here's one: Clevite has connecting rod bearings in sizes, Connecting rods: CB1443P (std), then add a suffix for the over size, like CB1443P-10, CB1443P-20, and CB1443P-30. Main Bearings: MS1822P (std), with the same system of suffixes to indicate over sizes, MS1822P-10, MS1822P-20, MS1822P-30. They have an online catalog at http://catalog.mahleclevite.com where you can build a kit of bearings.

As for an online service manual, no, I don't have a link to offer. The manuals are copyrighted material. Have you tried ordering a manual from one of the online sellers, like Amazon.com ? Also, there were a dozen or so 1992 Bonneville Service Manuals for sale on eBay.

Of course, there might be difficulty with buying off ebay and getting it Russia. Many ebay sellers ship only in the U.S.

Both are reputable companies with long histories of producing the product. The way American companies source products, it is quite possible that the stock bearings GM put in the motor were actually made by either firm. I personally prefer Clevite 77 Tri-metal bearings, but that is just my personal choice. Federal bearings can provide good service as well. It is more important to get the crank surface right and use the correct oil clearance rather than fixate on who made the bearings.
