Mods for better MPG's?

Chat about all things Bonneville (and related cars). Off-topic stuff should be in the lounge, and all mechanical problems should be posted in the proper forum.

Adding a HAI will give you 2MPG.

(If you install a 3" or so pipe from the intake and have the filter in the engine bay)

Hotter air contains less oxygen, meaning less power, meaning less fuel used.

Why does an Intense FWI add 1-2 MPG's then? Wouldn't that mean less MPG's?

hotter air contains less oxygen which means your vehicle will suck in more air to make the same amount of power, making it less efficient. You should get worse mileage with hotter air

X Infinity. Cooler air is denser, allowing you to burn your fuel more efficiently.

Except in the dead of winter when you'd expect to get better gas mileage, they change the gas formula so we get a little less mileage out of a gallon of gas.

there are many factors that give you poor mileage in winter, but thats a whole different thread.

yes, but the main point is cold air isnt one of those factors

Yep. Actually it isn't even the fact that the air is cold, it is the Density of the air the engine is breathing.

We think of cold as being good...and in our usual frame of reference that is true. "Hmm..do I take hot air from the engine compartment to shove into the intake, or do I get cooler air from outside?" ...That's a no-brain-er. Both air sources have the same moisture content, so the cooler source is going to be slightly denser than the warmer source. But, just because it is a cold day outside, does not mean that it is a dense air day.

I used to love flying on a freezing cold February day. Clear blue skies, low humidity, super dense air. The little Cessna 172 practically lept off the ground like a little kid on too much sweets. "please lemme fly, please lemme fly, wheeeeeee".

On a different note (more for the folk with the pre-FWD Bonnevilles) There's still hope for the big pushrod V8 motors. I ran across a company (Mechadyne) who is still working on concentric cams/phaser technology to alter cam lobe seperation while the motor is running...effectively cutting the displacement of the motor in idle/cruise. This is a little simpler than the DoD system that uses a phaser on the rocker shafts to cut the engines displacement while running. The concentric cams fit in stock blocks with enough room under the timing cover to fit the cam phaser electronics.

I know this may be sacrilage...but an option for the FWD crowd would be to walk away from the venerable 3800 motor and do an engine swap to a smaller displacement 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4 motor....of if a crashed Caddy CTS shows up in your local wrecking yard, go for the LY7 3600 CVVT motor

Then to hell I go... The LY7 is rated at 255hp @6200rpm... that's actually more power on tap than a lot of the stock N/A 3800 motors. If the right motor shows up at the right price, then my advice is to roll with it.

I do pretty bad in the city (14 mpg) but I think that is mostly my fault. At 55 I get right around 30, and highway I think its about 24-25. Unfortunately for me most of my driving is city
