Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
My '05 Bonneville GXP has developed a double click when slowing down.
It doesn't seem to be affected by how hard the brakes are applied, and only a slight change to the clicks if I am turning to the right. Turning left or straight, it is the same.
Every time I stop, as a slow past 15-13 mph, I get two short clicks, (the first slightly louder than the second) from the drivers front area.
To get an idea of the sound, picture 2 1/8" or 1/16" pieces of steel about 1" x 4" laying in the street about a foot, foot and a half apart. Drive over them every time you're coming to a stop.
That is what it sounds like.
I pulled the tire and caliper to check the brakes, but evenything appears the way it should.
The only way I can prevent the click is to knock the tranny into neutral before I've slowed to the point that it would normally be heard, or if I let the car slow itself to a stop (while still in gear) it will (sometimes) avoid the click.
I keep thinking CV, but I've never heard one do something like this before.
Any suggestions, ideas, thoughts?

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
Mine does it as well and I have attributed it to the replacement Akebono pads "walking" in the caliper ever so slightly.
I can of course be wrong so I will watch this one intently to see what others think it may be.

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
I had a similar problem it turned out to be a broken clip in the tranny, on my car the tranny would click twice when ever i was slowing at around 12 to 15 mph. to see if its the same thing you can try slowing the car without using the brakes and see if you get the noise. Also you can put the car in 1st gear and go over 20mph and then let the car slow down and you shouldn't hear the noise. The noise happens when the tranny shifts from 2nd to 1st. The problem is the clip that holds the solinoid that shifts tranny from 2nd to 1st. at least thats what it was for me. someone else on here had the same problem as well. the other guy had to have his tranny rebuilt. in my case the clip came off and got into the valve body and scored it so the valve body had to be replaced. It was under warrenty so I dont know what it would cost. see post "clicks twice when slowing" should be around page 3
good luck

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
I REALLY APPRECIATE THE INFORMATION!!
It's nice to know I'm not loosing my mind (missing something obvious), and won't be wasting my time replacing the axle.
I think I'll drop the pan to (hopefully) get any loose debris out of there and just drive it.
Thanks again,
Ken

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
As an update:
I have a new tranny in the car.
I can confirm that the servo clip was indeed broken, just like skid05bonnie said.
I also had a worn passaged in the valve body causing the tranny to start burning 3rd gear. It wasn't gone, but it would have started causing other issues in the near future.
Now that it's done and my bank account is $2,992.00 emptier, it's now quiet.
As a bonus, I had them to install the new front and rear motor mounts when they installed the new tranny.

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
Exact thing happened to my moms GXP. The noise would occur at exactly 14 then 13mph when slowing. The dealer originally thought it was bad brakes. They put new front pads and rotors on. I left the dealer and heard the noise, turned around and went back. Took a tech and the service writer on a drive and they both heard it. Was refunded the money for the brake job and then they kept the car for 5 weeks. They rebuilt the trans once in that time then GM told them to order a new trans after the rebuilt was still making noise. This happend in Dec 08 at just over 30k miles. Luckily the car was still under warranty.

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
I dropped my '05 GXP at the dealer on Tuesday to have the clicking noise in the trans repaired (scratch the previous notion that it was the brake pads causing the noise ^^^^) and to have the front hub bearings replaced as well as the clunking in the steering shaft.
Extended factory warranty is a nice thing to have... especially at 76+K miles.

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
Update... so the dealer says that they now can't hear the clicking sounds and can't find the tsb for the transmission.
I fax the tsb to them and they call back and say "that tsb is for the 4t80e transmission and your car ('05 gxp) has the 4t65e trans".
I am holding my tongue and cursing the fact that I even went there again after the fiasco of them trying to charge me an hours labor to replace a rear wheel stud on my wifes Envoy while they were doing axle seals under warranty.
Where can I find a diagram that shows the differences between these two different transmissions?

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
I'd call the service manager. Read him the VIN and ask him to run it, and say what the freaking computer says. Better yet, go in there and have the VIN, then have him punch it into the computer and have him show you what trans you have. There isn't really a diagram, just the fact that he's dumb. He must be thinking Grand Prix GXP...

Are the pans different or some other obvious thing that I could point out to him that his tech is an idiot?
I know this trans does not have a traditional dipstick but does the 4t65e?

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
Yeah, it does. The fill cap is under the air box. Just tell him to run the VIN, it will say in the spec sheet "MH1 - TRANSMISSION,AUTOMATIC 4-SPEED". That's the 4T80E. If he doesn't believe you, go to another friggin dealer.
The sheet should look like this:

Re: Click when stopping, can't find a source.....
Hey 05gxp, would you happen to have that TSB? My GXP is doing the same clicking at 14mph and the mechanics at the dealer can hear it but they don't think it's the tranny and said it would take 2-3 hours to locate. They suggested I just wait until it gets worse so that it's easier to find. I told them what I thought it was, based on these posts, and apparently they didn't believe me. But if there's a TSB on it, I'll take it back and present it to them.05gxp wrote:Update... so the dealer says that they now can't hear the clicking sounds and can't find the tsb for the transmission.

Sorry, forgot to check back in...
I don't have the TSB handy but will dig it up here soon.
As far as the update it still makes the clicking noises and frankly I am convinced that the local dealership is manned by idiots.
On the receipt I got is basically shows all the parts and from looking at it one would believe that they split the case to replace the accumulator and clip with fresh fluid etc...
I have been busy and haven't been back and don't plan on paying another deductible to have them repair something that they didn't do correctly the first time.
More to follow.
