Stalling and stranded!!!!!
Major road trip, Austin to Fort Collins to Albuquerque to Austin. Left Albuquerque this morning to go back to Austin. Car stalled 4 times in 120 miles, this time at speed (75-80). It shuts down like you turn the key off, no bucking or jerking, just shuts off. Will restart in a couple of minutes. It used to do this only in town but its become a real concern now that it is doing it at road speeds. I aborted the trip and made it back to Albuquerque, the whole way back to Alb, it did not die once!!!
The fuel pump, filter and relay was just replaced 'bout 600 miles ago (yea, it crapped out on the highway to). I know there was a TSB on "95's stalling on deceleration and it called for replacing the PROM chip. I have pulled the computer and it is a Delphi Reman. Service number is, 16183247, the number on the PROM is,BNUW 5799. I am at a loss here. A full scan has showed on codes. It ran perfect the whole way back to Alb. Before leaving Austin, I cleaned every connection under the hood I could find. Do I throw another PCM at it? Get a new PROM chip, or both? I need some help here. I am gonna send the wife and kid back to Austin on plane till I can get this thing figured out.

Re: Stalling and stranded!!!!!
Regardless of new fuel parts, they can be faulty. Check fuel pressure.
No codes? Thats odd.
My next thing would be to check the coils resistance and the ICM, or just swap with a different set.
Hard to know when its fixed since you say it does it at completely random times.

In looking at the chips BNUW/5799 is the chip to correct for stall in decel mode57lxi wrote:Major road trip, Austin to Fort Collins to Albuquerque to Austin. L36 4T60-E 2.84 gear ratio..
But I am confused as you were not in decel mode... You were cruising.. I'd say its possible to have an ICM, PCM or Crank sensor issue.. Wish I was close enough to you to stuff another test PCM in there.. After rereading I am really tempted to tell you to try another PCM...
Any Junk Yards near where you are?

Re: Stalling and stranded!!!!!
Thanks for the responses guys. Yea, it is odd it would do it while at cruise speed. At least now I know I have to right "decel" chip in it now. I would think a bad CPS would throw some kind of code, but I guess not. I am gonna go for the run to Austin and keep my fingers crossed. There are lotsa good wrecking yards in Albuquerque but they all like to take the day off on Sunday. When I get it back to Austin, I can do the CPS and look into the PCM and ICM issue. I got soaked for 6 bills on the fuel pump replacement and I can only imagine what they want for a CPS replacement.
As long as it keeps fireing back up, I figure I can make it.
*dang* cars, gotta love em!!!

Re: Stalling and stranded!!!!!----UPDATE
Rolled outa Albuquerque hoping the stalling/shutdown issue would stay away.
Didn't miss a beat.
But, to add futher pain and suffering, I lost the UIM 30 miles outa Roswell NM.
Back on the flatbed and back to Roswell.
With my credit card puckering, I had the car dropped off at the GM dealer. Down on one knee, I pleaded with the Service Manager to get the car on a hoist and drain the oil before it sat all night. Being a old time gearhead, he quickly had a tech hoist 'er up and drain the oil. Droped the car down and pulled the plugs to purge water in the cylinders. Sprayed down all the cylinders with WD40 and turned the engine over by hand. Off to the Ramada. To shorten the story, the GM Service manager was willing to scrounge up a APN manifold and the correct metal LIM gaskets. Day and a half later, the Olds was back on the road.
The remaining drive was totally uneventful, and no stalling!!
Moral of the story; both the fuel pump and UIM/LIM were on my "list" of immediate fixes as soon as I got back to Austin as I have to duplicate this trip in August. Should, coulda and woulda.
As mentioned here before, its not if the UIM/LIM will fail, its when. 900 miles from the house is NOT a good place for anything to fail, let alone manifolds and fuel pumps. Between the fuel pump and manifold job, I would have had less than 4 bills in the job. Lets just say I went over that amount.

Ouch! Ouch! and Triple Ouch!
Sorry for your pain, brother. That is one tough trip you had. Sorry it cost you so much, but at least it is repaired now and should be good to go for quite a while now. At least wrt those items, anyway.

Re: Stalling and stranded!!!!!
I'd wager your stalling to be due to a failing crank sensor, when mine was going it would do the same thing.

Re: Stalling and stranded!!!!!
It could the CPS. I am going to replace it anyway BEFORE my return trip to Fort Collins. It gotta be cheaper to do it my driveway than having a outa town dealer do it. I am also gonna carry a known good ICM and PCM and coil pack on the next trip.

Re: Stalling and stranded!!!!!
Always carries a Spare PCM... The Transport will make the next long trip and uses the same 94-95 PCM as your car... Some laugh at me and call it the " Trunk PCM " Because I always leave home with a Spare :sad5:57lxi wrote:It could the CPS. I am going to replace it anyway BEFORE my return trip to Fort Collins. Re: Stalling and stranded!!!!! Revisited
Yesterday I go to the water park, no problems. I go to leave and the rig won't start, no spark. Couple hours later and the tow truck drops the car off in front of the house. Just for grins, I try to fire it up. Boom, starts on the first try. I smoke 'er into the the driveway. Next morning same thing, fires right up. So, I attack the Crank and cam sensor. Bolt on dampner is like welded in. After a couple of hours, I apply a little heat and hit it with the Ingersol Rand again, breakes loose. A two jaw puller slides the balancer off. I replace the crank and cam sensor and reassemble. Everything seems ok now. Tormorrow I am going to replace the ICM and see how things go. ANY more stalling and the PCM gets the boot with a new one. I found the bolt on the dampner had a good amount of red locktite on it, hence the heat and easy removal of the bolt.
