Oil level drop

Post by WeeBey »

I was driving the Park Ave around and I noticed that when I am at a stand still the oil pressure drops so low that the red light comes on, but when I'm driving the car it stays at about 40. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

First off replace your pressure sender with an AC Delco unit, to make sure you're getting an accurate reading.

What brand and weight oil and filter are you running?

Honestly, I just traded the Le Sabre for this car. So I don't know.

I plan to tune it up and change the oil this week. This car seems to have a lot of "bugs/issues", but boy does it RUN! It will do until I can find a super charged Bonny.

Change the oil put in a good quality 10W-30, a new Sensor and a Good filter (no Fram) and then let us know what your pressures are.

It will be located on the same bracket that the oil filter screws into.

I plan on working on the Park Avenue today. I will be replacing the pressure sender, and tuning it up (TR 55s, Napa wires, Valvoline 10w30, and Purolator oil filter); if the oil level still drops at a stand still what part should I have on stand by?

Thanks

Level? Look at the pan gasket. Or valve cover gaskets.

Running a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil at the next oil change will clean up the internals. If it burns oil after that, it may just be a burner...

He means oil pressure level, Dave. If so, then you have oil pressure issues, and are going to have to deal with it. You could pull the pan and make sure that the pickup screen isn't partially plugged, causing low pressure at idle.

D'oh! Check the sender, and change that oil filter.

I changed the oil and the sensor and the pressure doesn't drop as low as before, but still dips sometimes. Next, I will drop the pan and go from there. Should I just change the pick up right away?

Don't need to change it, just pull it off and make sure there isn't stuff in the screen or tubes. Flush it out with some degreaser, make sure it's clear, then put it back on.

Will I need a new oil pan gasket? Thanks for all the help on this.

Yes, you will. Be sure to get a rubber one if there's an option. Cork can be hard to get aligned and sealed.

Before going through dropping the pan why not put a mechanical gauge on it and read the real pressure? 40psi while driving is low from any 3800 engine I've owned, maybe the dash gauge is just not reading correct, from my experience the gauges in these cars could be better. I would try another gauge to check the accuracy of the dash gauge before digging in further.
Is the oil pressure low when the engine is hot, cold or does t matter?
